A lot of people don't have bottles at home, they just have some drinks when they go out.

Not really true. Imaginary numbers were put on a sound footing by Gauss in the 1800s. Mathematicians were very comfortable with them by the time of quantum physics. Generally mathematicians are not concerned about whether there are physical applications.

its like going to your favorite closest place to have a lunch at, you know the staff, employees, menu, offers, they know you versus going out eating driving to another city to a different place

Fun fact - methanol is really only a concern 1) if you are fermenting fruit or 2) if the federal government denatures (poisons) your moonshine with it like they did during prohibition.
Other fun fact - the antidote for methanol poisoning is….ethanol.

It's not what it's "actually for", it's one application among many, including their original algebraic origins.

That’s maybe true at the mid-high end of vodka (although even there viscosity can be different), but the bad stuff definitely has a distinctive taste for the reasons all low quality spirits have a distinctive taste.

People used to say that you’re supposed to “drink x amounts of water per y”. I’m fairly sure that that’s been disputed and you should really just drink when thirsty. Preferably water.

I’m sure there are people who can’t, but you can def develop your palate enough to tell shitty well vodka from a level or two up.

When the home team is on offense, the crowd will be quiet as church mice before every play, so that players can hear play calls. Conversely, when the visiting team is on offense, the crowd will scream their heads off.

Reply to ELi5 : If you can access a website, why cant you steal the source code and make a 1:1 copy of it? by 13lettersinhere
Nothing technical. Just like you can scan and OCR a book, you can copy the code for a website.
But that's copyright violation, which is illegal.
In practice it will rarely do you a lot of good. Sure, there are some static websites, but most are interactice in some way, and usually rely on server side stuff.

Uhhh... Say you don't know shit about California without saying you don't know shit about California.
I'm standing by for when you say you are from California or something. My reply will be "so it's incompetence, not ignorance."

Reply to ELI5: How does surgery on tendons work? by RaphaelRhyss
I tore my patella tendon. Tendons don’t reattach so the doctor drilled holes on my tibia and patella and sutured it in place. Those sutures are supposed to hold it forever. Fingers crossed.

The fields my be the same dimensions, but they're not the same. It's your field, your stadium, your livery, your equipment, your dressing rooms, and mostly your fan base. Also, you didn't have to travel to be here. There could be other factors, too, like you being used to the weather or other conditions.

Being in your hometown. Not having to travel to a different city for a game. No time zone difference. Eating local foods. Local fans rooting for you.

It's basically like fighting and defending your turf, house, grounds whatever. People get a little more defensive about their ground/ property taken from them. I understand your confusion, usually it relates to warfare. Where an invasive country comes into another. People that live their, grew up there, know the territory better than the invasion army. Therefore homefeild has advantage. People just view football as war apparently and think same situations apply.

Reply to comment by steruY in ELI5: how did we standardize on watts/amps/volts when everything else is segmented across the world (km/miles, nm/ft-lb etc)? by t0r3n0
Voltage is originally not created using in the KMS system with kilo, meter, and second but a unit in the CGS system that has the base in centimeters, gram, and second. That were the customary units in science when the field was created.

It is when International Electrical Congress (IEC) defined the unit in 1881 it was scaled up for the voltage in the MKS system, International Electrical Congress become International Electrotechnical Commission in 1906 still called IEC, and is still a standard organization for that field.

So it is units that were very quickly defined within the international agreement before any large-scale adaptation.
This also shows there is no metric system, there are many metric systems. MTS(meter-tonne-second) was used industrially in France and the soviet union in the first half of this century.
What is commonly used today is the SI system which is A metric system, not THE metric system.
The CGS system is still used in for example magnetism. The usage have decreased with MKS standards in 1940 and the SI standards in the 1960s. It has been used longer in theoretical sciences compared to practical engineering.
