Reply to ELI5: if you’re lactose intolerant, why does the lactose cause bowel distress instead of passing through inertly? by chemstu69
A huge family of gut bacteria are capable of fermenting lactose. They are relatives of our old Friend E.coli.
If you can't digest it they will and when they do they produce a whole lot of gas! It's being forcibly inflated by the gas that causes the discomfort and potential projectile sharting.

Even without the bacteria, lactose is osmotically active so it limits water absorption by your intestines which causes diarrhea just like sorbitol

Yes, thanks you corrected me. BMX bikes are not meant for mountain biking. Mountain bikes have larger tires and suspension for off road and trails.

Human rights are just something we made up. Slavery used to be something we considered ok, now we don't and it's illegal, then we made freedom a human right and grant clemency to everyone.

Im guessing the heat death of the universe would be a pretty sure bet for the end of the earth. Let’s hope I don’t get disappointed!

Reply to Eli5 why certain internal combustion engines (like those on American muscle cars) make wildly different sounds than most other engines? by Daftworks
>Same goes for Harley Davidsons vs regular motorbikes.
With Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the V-Twin cylinders are 45° apart. With most other V-Twin makes the cylinders are 90° apart. The cylinders fire at slightly different times relative to the other cylinder and produces a different sound.
And, of course, a V-Twin will sound different than other engine configurations like an inline four or a triple.
A Boss Hoss sounds like a small block Chevy because it has a small block Chevy engine in it. For example, https://bosshoss.com/motorbike/standard-bike/

Reply to comment by Aussie_Mo_Bro in ELI5: Why do Developers publish their code on Github to the public when “giving it away” could hurt their ability to monetize their creations? by AndreLinoge55
Sure, I'm not saying you open source code produced for someone else.
Companies sometimes open-souece code that they need but isn't key to their profit. For example, Facebook open sourced React because they found it to be a useful way to build web frontend but it has nothing to do with their core business. So Facebook gets more out of people freely collaborating on React than they would out of keeping it secret.

Reply to comment by TehWildMan_ in ELI5. What happens to ‘criminals’ when the law changes and what they were imprisoned for is no longer illegal? by L0rdTeddingt0n
This is a big issue around drug decriminalization. Especially since the argument is these should never have been criminalized in the first place, most people agree someone in prison on drug charges should be let out. But what if they have other charges that came with the drug charges. Should possession only be forgiven, or also distribution? Smuggling charges? Resisting arrest? Tax evasion on drug profits? Possession of a firearm while you had a drug felony? You killed someone over a drug dispute?
Most people would probably say murder is still murder and the last example is easy, but It gets really complicated and everyone will probably draw the line at a different place.

There is a condition called Auto-Brewery Syndrome that can cause significant amounts of ethanol to be produced by gastrointestinal flora, but I'm not sure if it has any links to lactose intolerance.

You first do what you know works. If it doesn't then you progress to treatments which are more speculative or have more harmful side effects.
