An event with only a 1 percent chance of occurring is not guaranteed to eventually occur. But empirically, an event with a 1 percent probability will occur an average of approximately 1 time in every 100 tests.
So if you run 1000 tests, empirically, we would expect to see 10 occurrences. Experimentally, this turns out to be the case. Even though results for each set may vary above and below what the probability predicts should occur, as the number of sets increases, the average of all the sets converges on the probability.

I have yet to see a generic version of Advil Dual Action, which is truly a miracle pill.
And as an all-year-long “seasonal allergy” sufferer, there’s really no generic allergy medication that comes close to Zyrtec in relieving my allergy symptoms.
The generic version of BioFreeze has an odd odor, and seems greasier than the original.
There are justifiable reasons to not purchase generic medications.

I'll also add plasterboard and the metal beading should never directly touch the floor as it enables rising damp if it does. It's intentionally left short

That's my experience!
We like to walk to get breakfast on weekend mornings, it's about 8 blocks away. My 3yo tears out the door at full speed and runs circles around everyone for the first two blocks. Then for the next 6 blocks she drags her feet, asking us to carry her because she's too tired. We end up either carrying her a bit or stopping every block to take a long rest break.

You just gave three separate examples of why you would, and you're ONE person.
Now extend your post to someone else.
- "It's the only thing I ever see advertised on TV."
- "9 out of 10 doctors recommend it compared to... well, the other... stuff"
- "My niece told me she saw a poster for it and it helped her sick baby."
- "It's been around for over a hundred years!"
- "I am a Huge fan of Politician X, and he promoted it!"
- "I just love their advertisements, they make me laugh so hard!"
And keep going.
Yes, some of those answers are probably indicative of someone that's not as aware or smart as you.
But that doesn't matter if they spend their money on the brand product in question.

Yeah I’ll give store brand anything a try, but I often find there a noticeable quality difference, usually in favor of the branded items.

It's liquid enough to circulate somewhat, dragging the more-solid slabs of the lithosphere around the surface of the Earth.

Reply to comment by dkf295 in ELI5: why are male to male USB-C cables not dangerous like male to male wall plugs are? by KeyStomach0
EV charger connectors are a bit like that. They don't energize until signaling pins have been connected, and the car has told the charger what it needs (or vice versa). Those pins connect last and break connection first, so the big contacts are always without power when they disengage, preventing arcing.

I used to manage route sales. For instance, store brand bread is made and distributed by a name brand company. Because of this, the name brand company had more and better shelf space than other brands.
Few companies would make only store brand products since more markup is on name brand.

It’s not that they have more energy. They just don’t conserve energy like adults do. Just like a juvenile snake will put all of its venom in one bite children use up all of their energy and then collapse in exhaustion.

Reply to comment by GotPerl in ELI5- Given the average cost of a cup of coffee is marked up about ~80%, why hasn’t a company come in and charge significantly less to take a greater share of the market? by Educational_Sir3783
What's sad is the effort that goes into each and every one of those coffee beans. They are the seeds of a fruit. The coffee cherry. The process of picking those cherries, taking out the seed, de-pulping/skinning it, drying it, and all the other things that are done to it are arduous and take a lot of time. Most of the coffee that is bought into developed companies comes at a humanitarian price to the countries from which they came. If people thought for a moment about the process of each one of those beans, or had to do that shit themselves, they'd probably pay MUCH more than what they do.

"The Hole" is whatever your captors in a particular facility decide they want it to be. It can be anything from a dark cell with a thin mattress and a blanket to an empty box with a drain to shit into and constant "checks" to keep you from sleeping in between freezing firehose sessions.

Dollar General has a Market Cap of 48.36 Billion, Apple’s is 2.33 Trillion, roughly 48 times more. Safe to say Apple is a bit more successful

You moved the goal posts. It was about comparing stores. DG is one of USA's most successful retailers.

ELI5 + "University project"
Really?
Anyhow, the keywords you need are Refraction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refraction for why light bends when it enters glass or water etc.,
and Dispersion https://brilliant.org/wiki/dispersion-and-scattering-of-light/
Dispersion is the phenomenon that refractive index isn't actually a constant for a material, but is slightly dependent on the wavelength of the light. This is why prisms split up white light into a "rainbow" spectrum, and why lenses suffer chromatic aberration (unwanted different focus for different colours/and coloured edges on things).

Reply to ELI5: In math - when we say the probability of something occurring over “infinite” time is 1, does that not completely ignore intervening events that cause the probability to be 0. by Mikiemax80
If you consider that other ways of dying prevent you from dying by being hit by a train (which kinda makes sense, you only
livedie once), then you are not considering anymore the probability of being hit by a train over an infinite period of time. You are just considering the period until you die of some other cause. On the other hand, if you are some immortal superhero, then yes, in that case, all the other causes of "death" are not final anymore, and in that case the probably you will die being hit by a train will be 1. It absolutely will happen to you. And since you will resurrect right after that, it will even happen multiple times. An infinite number of times. Enjoy!
