Reply to eli5 What would happen if I had a big enough airplane to throw a ball around then the airplane turns while the ball is in mid air? by the_lost_cheeto
Only changes in speed or direction would be noticeable.
Think about that fly buzzing around in the car while we’re driving. Flies can’t fly 60mph, right? He flies normally because inside of the the car, he is part of the car. But, if we slammed on the breaks really really hard, the fly would move towards the windshield, and so would you. That is why we have seatbelts :)
I one time tried to jump really really high, so high that the Earth would keep spinning under me and I would land in a different place. But I landed in the same spot. Better idea, I tried to throw a rock super high. But it came straight down too.
It turns out the earth is our car and we are like the flies!

I had to look up "are all olives pickled" because I thought "pickled" involved vinegar. I had no idea it included salt brine, sugar brine, and oil. TIL Thanks!

Reply to comment by PickledSpace56 in eli5 why ancient historical buildings haven’t been kept up? Why are buildings like the Parthenon and the Colosseum in such disrepair? Greece and Rome/Italy have existed the entire time? by PickledSpace56
Why not just knock it down and put up a McDonald's?
Among other reasons, it's there because it's historical. A testament to a lost time. I would argue we should maintain it's current state, but I'm hesitant to say we should rebuild. Everything done to these monuments throughout history stands as a reminder of the time, and will continue to stand as a reminder of time after should it continue to change.
We don't need the space for anything. If ever there comes a time when we do then taking it down or even rebuilding will just add to the site's rich history.

I always thought sauerkraut wasn't "technically" pickled but fermented.
After a cursory Google search I have no idea how I came to that conclusion that that doesn't still count as pickling.
Easily my favorite pickled product.

Maize, maiz, teosinte, mahiz, and Indian corn.
Edit: and scientists might call it zea mays.

I love pickled cukes, carrots, onions, even herring. I can't stand sauerkraut or olives and I've tried. A muffaletta sammich looks delicious, but the olives ruin it for me. I also prefer a corned beef special over a Reuben.

It's pretty common now in the UK as well, with trendy burger places being more common. In the past, I think it would've always been referred to as a gherkin. Pickled onions are the main pickle here (in Scotland anyway).

Outside of Canada/US/Australia/New Zealand, it's usually maize. It used to be called "Indian corn", but I don't know if that's still used anywhere. If you're American, what you instinctively think of as "corn" is usually sweet corn, and some people will refer to it specifically as sweet corn.

All I will say is that it's better to have slow healthcare than none at all; given many Americans just never go in for routine medical check ups due to the cost.

I know someone who recently said that if healthcare gets socialized (I assume she means universal health care) that the quality of care will be worse than it already is. But my reasoning is if healthcare was universal I could just go see a rheumatologist and get evaluated instead of waiting for my GP to care. Do you know of any resources that show quality of care in other countries with universal health care?

Ketchup is mostly certainly called tomato ketchup. Look at the bottle.

Gherkins are generally sweet, dilled pickles are often called cornichons in Australia.

“Normal” is a subjective term. And not a terribly useful one in this context.
