It's not necessarily true that there are only benefits at distances where you're "basically tailgating". For example this paper found a noticeable benefit for two tractor trailers even at 20 meters distance.
20 meters might be a little closer than "optimal safety", but in real life on busy highways many people are following that close behind or closer. This paper found the biggest benefit at 60 feet but even at 160 feet there were significant benefits.

Reply to ELI5: VPNs, Proxies, and Torrents. by Yoyoyodog123
VPN: imagine you've got basic a tin can phone that you can put anywhere on the planet. Data goes from your side out to the world on the other side, and as far as the internet is concerned, it doesn't worry about the string, it just thinks you're the can on the end (for the most part). Typically encrypted and stable.
Proxy: same can, except you've given the other end to a friend, and the friend is asking the internet things for you, and relaying them back. Not typically encrypted, meaning they're usually faster. Time servers are a good example for use case
Torrent: still working on it NGL. My understanding is files can be split into multiple locations, pointing at each other, and are more resilient to failures.

VPN - Virtual Private Network. you can use this to pretend you're in a network that you aren't local to. Often used to connect to work or school.
Proxy - A different computer your computer sends/receives messages through. The other end of these messages often believe you're the proxy server, and never know who you are.
Torrent - Download parts of a file from different hosts, and merge them locally to get the original file. Filed are sliced into tiny portions which you then source from everyone seeding that torrent - it is peer-to-peer (e.g the files don't have to hit a server) so it can stay more anonymous.

Reply to ELI5: Why is the number of women who suffer from urinary incontinence twice that of men? by magipod
Pretty sure child birth can weaken the pelvic floor muscles etc. usually women are recommended to practice pelvic floor exercises before and following child birth to assist with giving birth, and also as a preventive measure for urinary incontinence

Mythbusters did an episode on this. Final conclusion: Yeah, it could help, but only at VERY dangerously close distances. And you'll go grey trying to drive that way.

Spend the couple extra bucks on the gas and avoid the potential for large bucks to hospitals and insurance companies.

Just because you didn't get in an accident, doesn't mean that it was safe. Trucks may change speeds slower than cars as a general rule, but you can't see what is happening in front of that truck...

That fact would only make beard competitions more silly. It is not an action (or lack thereof) that has you succeed, but genetics.

To put it in perspective: there are species of fish that are more closely related to humans than they are to some other species of fish

Nobody I’ve ever worked with in the hardware side of IT has ever called storage “memory” and I’ve been doing this for well over 30 years.
When our devs refer to memory, we are always asking them to differentiate between RAM and storage.

I'll piggy back on this to supplement the evolutionary reasons for this.
Mammals, birds, and fish all use sexual selection as a primary basis for their reproductive process. Demonstrating you are an exceptional member of your species is vital to attracting a mate and reproducing successfully. Typically, a Male of a species competes with others for the attentions of the choosy female. To do so they must prove they are stronger, faster, smarter, better fed, and generally more capable of supporting and/or protecting the dependent female than their competitors, or at the very least that his genes are worth the significant female energy investment to bearing offspring.
In the mammalian world, these competitions are best done in a way that is synergistic with survival demands. What better way to prove you can survive better than an opponent than to overcome them in some physical contest: Fight, be bigger, thump louder, etc. often while demonstrating a handicap that accentuates your ability to overcome (think Ginormous antlers that take a lot of food and energy to make and whose weight alone is a hinderance)? Even if you lose this contest you'll survive, learn from the experience, and the innate toughness it required in the first place makes you better to survive in the wild generally speaking.
Birds cannot tolerate the physical stresses of violent competition because the physics they rely on do not allow their skeletons to support it. It would be way to easy for hollow bird bones to break turning a fight lethal 90% of the time. How to compete then? For them, physical indicators are better: bright colourful pigmentation is energy intensive to produce. It will fade if the male is malnourished. It also reveals the presence of disease or parasites. The disadvantage of being so visible proves you are cunning as you're still alive despite it. Coupled with other attributes and performances this allows males to compete with Displays instead of fighting, for a much more survivable experience.
The reasons behind Fish colouration are less clear afaik. Best guesses are that the particular colour pattern of a fish allows them to camouflage in their colourful environment better.

I assume paraphyletic is a short way of saying basically the thing I just did: "there is a single fish branch if you're okay with a bunch of non-fish in it"

Although not impossible, as my father used to point out by drafting right behind big trucks for 200 miles and getting almost a whole mile per gallon better gas mileage... occasionally it upset the trucker...

First this is r/explainitlikeimfive, accuracy is not the highest importance but a simple to understand general (but somewhat accurate) explanation is usually enough.
Secondary, there are two types of memory in a computer, primary memory (RAM, CPU cache and ROM) and secondary memory (SSD, HDD, CD, Floppy disks, tape or any other storage media).
Those two definitions are what is generally used in computers and are a very simple way of differentiating between the two categories of memory (short term vs long term) which is what you call memory and storage, both are types of memory.
The confusion comes from that Random Acces Memory contains the word “memory” and Hard Disk Drive, Solid State Drive, Compact Disk etc. doesn’t contain the word memory even though they are all different types of long term memory storage technologies.
Here is one of many links that explains the different types of computer memory in more detail: https://www.enterprisestorageforum.com/hardware/types-of-computer-memory/

When something moves through air, it leaves an empty space behind it. New air moves to fill that space, which is the phenomenon you're calling a slipstream.
If it's a very large object moving quickly, like an 18 wheeler going down the highway, there can be a lot of air moving in behind it, and if you're close enough, you can be pulled along with the air.
The ideal distance will vary depending on the size and speed involved, but it's generally a bad idea because you need to be an unsafe distance from them. You're basically tailgating them.
A cross wind would have an effect, because the point of lowest air pressure behind the truck would move, but again, not really worth considering because you'd have to be right up their ass.

You actually cannot calculate this for every known function.
Many functions have points where this will not work (e.g any non-continuous functions like the signum function, or non-smooth functions like absolute value) and some esoteric ones (like the Weierstrass function) can't be differentiated anywhere.
