Now that we've learned the truth about the actual person it's based on, the real con is the friends we made along the way

Reply to ELI5 why probiotics in food are good for you, where as antibiotics are considered bad unless they are medicine. by ijustfuhyobih
Probiotics and antibiotics are two opposite things; why would you assume they are both good or bad?
Probiotics are meant to stimulate the bacteria in your gut, which are already present, so making them more active isn’t a huge risk. Antibiotics kill bacteria throughout your body, including in your gut. Your gut bacteria are very helpful in you digestion of food, so you should avoid killing them unless you need to.
As an example, it’s better to give your employees a bonus rather than fire a bunch of them. A bonus won’t hurt your employees, and therefore your business, while firing employees will definitely hurt your business.

I'm not going to argue with you on those points! Just speaking theoretically here. I mean, suppose a healthy baby cow got struck by a fallen tree or died in some other sort of physical accident.

Reply to comment by RadBadTad in ELI5: with food (like Gouda) that need exact temperatures to create, how did people in early civilisation do it? Would their dishes often come out ruined/different? by [deleted]
Agreed on most of what you said, with a small correction: that people today have more time and can watch movies, entertainment, etc, because of advances that freed our time. Previously people used to spend a lot more of their time finding and growing food, crafting stuff, etc, mostly during daylight before electricity enabled people to see brightly at night. (so people also probably slept more too)

And if you are talking about the ISS or other potential future long-term manned missions, it is important to make sure you don't carry up any microbes that could potentially screw up a biosystem that is already going to be really hard to maintain.

Reply to ELI5 why does taking a multi-vitamin on an empty stomach cause nausea, but something like Tylenol doesn’t? by sftysw
I have this issue big time. Even if I eat a meal beforehand. I’ve heard it’s because of the iron and some vitamins like folate and vitamin c are acidic. Had to stop drinking as much coffee for the same reason.

When an onion's cells are damaged they release a small amount of sulfurous gas (I don't know the exact compound off the top of my head).
When this gas hits your eyes, it reacts with the moisture there to create a little bit of sulfuric acid. This, obviously, would be quite painful.

Yes, it’s practically the exact same system, with the same function and features and similar small fees for instant transfer, in the US.

Running out of money to pay the army or police is a good way to kick off a coup or revolution. It's fairly rare for this to happen though, since most regimes know who they rely on, so any money they do have will go to them. (Though there can be conflicts - which branch of the military should get the most money? Who's more important, the military or the police? The main bulk of the army or the elite units?)

I see others commenting about iron, but it is probably the zinc, because multivitamins usually don't have enough iron in them to cause problems.

I was on grand jury duty and had a case like this presented. A smallish business used a courier to take checks to accounts. The courier used the account and routing info from those checks to get checks for himself. He would then pay his bills with those checks, except he would overpay. So bill for $120 would get a check for $1120. He would contact the company about the overpayment, and get a refund check from the company. We voted to indict.

Reply to comment by FordS123 in ELI5: Why do the glass panels for double glazing need to face a certain direction? What is different from one side to the other? by [deleted]
Most windows are directional in that the exterior side is generally self flashing and have weep holes.
When I did new construction inspections I would fail the insulation inspection and they would not receive a pass until it was done properly.

It’s possible that the Tylenol has a coating specifically to avoid stomach upset. The vitamin likely isn’t coated and may dissolve faster which is causing you irritation.

Sweet deal, glad I could help and good luck breaking in.
Actually I just scoped out some of your comment history and see you're working in CNC engineering and pop into physics and CAD subreddits a lot...I have an idea for a hand-cranked guitar pickup winder I'd like to design for 3d printing but for some reason I'm having a hell of a time getting my head around how to design the gearbox to multiply RPMs in a reasonable size. A guitar pickup involves upwards of 10,000 winds of a copper filament around the magnetic pole pieces. Motorized pickup winders tend to have speed controls from 600 to 2000 RPMs but for a hand-cranked machine 500RPM seems downright reasonable. We're talking <2oz balanced load. Is that something that might be in your wheelhouse that you could point me at some good resources or fundamentals about? Because I'd love to learn it.

Do you think it could negatively affect the installation to have them the wrong way around?

Interesting. Thanks for the great explanation. I had always been confused because whenever someone in my family had an infection they would be given antibiotics so I assumed they were inherently good to take. Yet seeing no antibiotics on dairy products the other day threw me for a loop as I’d always thought they were good for people
