How many android owners are buying Apple TVs over Roku or Chromecasts? Even for people already in the Apple ecosystem, an Apple TV is probably one of the last things they buy.

Just signed up for apple tv. I had to dig through my box of old phones to find my iphone with a crushed screen but would charge to activate my account. Very strange process.

There are many people in the 50+ age range that do not care what ecosystem their devices are part of. They get the android phone because their family recommends it, but then turn around and get an Apple TV because a friend of theirs recommended it. And they don’t really care how these devices interact with one another.

I just went through this. We got free apple tv by having T-Mobile. My TV has the apple tv app. We had apple laptops, but we spent all afternoon trying to find a way to set up an account and get it on the TV. The solution we eventually found was to charge up an old broken iphone.
Harvey_Rabbit t1_j4qnkib wrote
This is also an issue with the apple tv app on other devices.
Different-Beat7217 t1_j4qovvs wrote
AppleTV doesn’t require a person to have an iPhone. So there’s that. iPhone not needed
Even so. AppleTV has not been a huge success. The % of non iPhone users who have AppleTV is probably in single digits or lower.
If they did assume all AppleTV users had iPhone, it’s a pretty good time to not give a fuck about such a small number of users.

Anywhere I went (Totals to France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Cyprus and where I live, Turkey) it was people using stuff like Mi Boxes, Bravia or Philips TVs with preloaded Google TV or TVs with Amazon Fire OS. Although it is obvious that the usage count is not 0, from what I have seen, it is not widespread, although I can guess that there obviously are groups like you lot who use it.
b1e t1_j4r3hfz wrote
I mean in the US I wouldn’t say it’s super widespread either. Most people just use whatever chrome OS comes on their TV.
Main reason to get one is the vastly better UI + responsiveness, proper HDR support, and sometimes better streaming quality.

I’m in the UK and have owned several since the PowerPC days when you could install OS X on them with a bit of tinkering and turn them into pseudo Mac Mini’s. It helps that they used to give them out free with MacBooks and iMacs if you were a student or working in education. Now you just get an Apple media voucher.

I’d be curious to know this as well. I’m not entirely sure it’s “the last thing they buy” considering it’s dirt cheap in comparison to other Apple products and (arguably) a very nice product with lots of great features, but I could definitely be wrong here.
Full disclosure, I’m an Apple fanboy for sure but I’m also a UX designer and really appreciate how easy the Apple TV interface is to use. I bought my 72 year old mother one for Christmas a couple years ago (she’s an Android user) and it’s honestly the only tech she doesn’t call me asking how to use. In fact, she freaking loves that thing.

I am not an Apple person. Many people would go further and describe me as an Apple hater.
I do just prefer the Android ecosystem and that is where all my portable devices sit.
I do however own an Apple TV. I wanted a device with all of the various streaming services on (UK) and even allows me to watch my Google purchased movies via the YouTube app.
I also wanted a streamer that 'just works", fully supports Dolby Vision and has very minimal lip-sync issues. I am that person who owns only a single Apple product and it's an Apple TV.
If I want to be able to access the movies I've purchased through the Apple Store, I need to stick with it.
Soofla t1_j4s49rp wrote

The Apple "family" stuff can only be managed from an Apple device. And unlike Android, I can't put another user on one of my kid's iPhones, so I have to keep an old iPad in my office and the only time I ever use it is when I need to change a family setting.
Super annoying, honestly.

I think that is just it - the Media Streamer on our main TV is a family device and anyone in the family should just be able to switch it on and it all works.
That is definitely the case with the Apple TV box - switch on, everything tiled, click and away you go. All content accessible. It really is good at what it does.
Soofla t1_j4ucd5e wrote
I've tried a number of different devices, Firesticks, Chromecast and I've always had an issue with something being out of sync.
I run a Yamaha RX-V585 receiver to a Sony XE9300 TV and with the Apple TV box, all apps are in sync.
With the Firestick I seem to remember it was Amazon Prime UHD content that had a lipsync issue. With the Chromecast I'm sure it was Netflix - I'll admit it has been a while since I used either.
Frustrating watching and I'm getting the sound, just milliseconds, before the movement - very off-putting in dialogue heavy sequences.
