I can't really tell.

I mean you know what you will get, when you start RE.

But if you play Bioshock you maybe just expect some Pew Pew with Weapons.

But this whole world in Bioshock is just scary. You hear the dripping in a "canalissation". Little Steps and only got Andrew (?) via your Radio.

I never finished Bioshock 1 like you. Just too fucking scary. I mean. I played Resident Evil 7. This Game is also scary, but you know what you get.

But in Bioshock 1 you are walking around in a dystopia and there are Big Daddy who like to smash you.

I remember in one part of the game you entered a room and then the room started to get full of fog. I guess I started to scream lol.

It's not admitting it's bad, it's understanding that there are flaws and that those are the flaws that make other people dislike the game/book/song/movie/show. We don't accept that what we like or what we consider good, is flawed or has flaws as well.

Take RDR2 for example. I loved it. So did the critics, so did millions, but many gamers simply did not. Why? 'Horse-riding simulator'. Hearing this, the fanboys come running in defense of their beloved game, oh the characters, the narrative, the worldbuilding and the graphics. All true of course but what's also true is that you do in fact, spend half the time on horseback riding around. This is objectively true. And I, as a fan, can see why for some it just doesn't appeal.

>That would feel a whole lot like that 2/10 isn't actually based on my opinion of the thing, but rather some other arbitrary standard I've imagined for it.

It's not arbitrary, it's acknowledging that the flaws do in fact exist. You may not mind them at all and have a great experience but this does not take them away. You enjoying Forpsoken immensely thanks to the spell depth and combat does not take away from the fact that the open world is lacking. For you, that may not have been much of factor because you just don't care and therefore say it's a 7/10. Another person may hate Forspoken for exactly that reason and say it's a 2/10.

We take criticism for things beloved poorly because we hold them on a pedestal and deem them flawless in our eyes. Either I like a bland open world or you are wrong. Either I like the 'horse-riding simulator' or you are wrong. Either I like shallow combat system or you are wrong. You can enjoy things that you enjoy for the reason you enjoy them, but others won't for their reasons. The average person just doesn't have the self-esteem to like what they like despite all things which is why there's so much toxicity around media of all forms.

Assuming you haven’t played it, Dark Souls 1 is a pretty good introduction. Great level design. (Best in the series imo) Easy learning curve, and still holds up as a solid game. Mechanics might be considered a bit clunky by today’s standards.

People love Bloodborne but its a lot more fast paced than the Souls series and not what I would recommend as in introductory game.

Nioh is also a decent game for introduction.

Have not played it myself but have a friend who vouches for Code Vein

The boss fights are the most relaxing part of healing in FF14 because the tanks go crazy on the trash pulls. I'm there thinking we have a good 10 mins before I have to really start paying attention. I have my hand in a bag of chips with the TV on the in background and then tank just runs off through about 4 groups of enemies. I'm left behind thinking "fuuuuuck, I actually have to work".

Because it's really hard to do right. To find that balance between the enemy that is completely unaware you're killing his buddy 2 feet away and having the enemy share a hivemind so if one of them sees you in a bush the entire map knows your exact location instantly.

When it works it works but a lot of games have tried and done poorly and it's put the scare in a lot of developers when it comes to taking a chance on something so haphazardly successful.
