Freespace 2 (1999)

The space combat genre was a big deal in the mid/late-90s, but it lost its advantages as technology improved. FPS games started to provide more immersive environments, and could render & animate people that actually resembled people. Games like Half-Life took over, and the space combat genre fell off a cliff. Freespace 2 was caught at the apex of this event, it practically perfected the genre, but hardly sold any copies.

There's a moderate sized community based around Freespace 2 as an open source modding platform, but I genuinely feel it deserves more attention than that.

I prefer the older Final Fantasy games as well, but they've finally nailed what they've been wanting to do since Advent Children was released - the free flowing super fast combat with lots of flashy lights that stop you from seeing what the fuck is going on.

One of those games I play for the story not the game mechanics I guess.

MS Saga: A New Dawn - an RPG using the Gundam franchise in an original story. The customizing of load outs, optional equipment, and mixing of mech parts is one of the best in any RPG that I have every played. Tactics are essential (it's not the "equip best gun/missile/sword and you're good" type of game) and it's easy to spend over 99 hours just enjoying the game.

But it's also a VERY niche game.
