As a layman, what do you "do" halfway though? Isn't it all in the jump and the rest is "we'll see where/how we end up"?

This sounds like bad advice too. Granted jumping feet first you may get away with only two broken legs which is better than paralysis, but the better idea would be not to dive at all.
