For years I've been enviously looking at high-end headphones that I couldn't afford to buy.

It's almost New Year's Eve... I also have a small limit on my credit card. Then why not... Been researching for the DT900 Pro for the past few weeks and was planning to buy it. Almost... And then

Speaker terminals are R+, R-, L+, L- so you can connect them directly. You can make your own cable or buy one. There is also the Hifiman adapter you can buy which is pretty much a resistor box to help protect your headphones/amp.

Speaker amps don't really make that much of a difference unless you are listening at stupid high volumes. 50W speaker amp into 4 ohms is 14v. HE-6 is 50 ohms, which means only ~4W of power. That is still a ton of power but there is no guarantee is is clean, and even then, do you really need to listen that loud (114db)?

I had a pair of HE-6se that had a lower sensitivity than the HE6 and I was fine with a 1W amp. The people who think speaker amps do more for the sound are just not testing properly, especially in a planar with a flat impedance curve so it isn't even a tube amp thing where it does change the sound, just not for the reasons people seem to think.

I tried some cheapo but similar pads.... Man it killed the staging and made them way too dark IMO. Curious about ZMFs version though. They seem a bit thinner so probably stay closer to that original sound. Glad you got good sound out of the Dekonis. May have to give them a try at some point. Honestly though If I want more bass I just put on my Open Alphas. They scratch that itch like no other! And I typically don't like bass... But I like the Open Alphas!!!

Ditto. Mine has been super solid. Little bass heavy but great amp over all! Though recently bought a Burson Soloist 3x thinking "Gonna be diminishing returns..." and immediately after hearing it thought "Must listen to all my music for the first time... Again..." Simply shocked at the level of sound some of my cans are capable of. Especially the Open Alphas I made. Didn't expect them to hold up to and IMO trounce HD800S and OG Clears....

Briefly listenened to them at a store (a few years back now) and remember feeling very puzzled by what Sennheiser was thinking marketing this as one of their flagships. Not for me, definitely not at MSRP anyway, but this is a very subjective matter. I’d wouldn’t spend too much money you can’t get back if they don’t work for you IMO

So I am using only a 10 band EQ, because that's what my device has. But as you can see in this image, since I have the Z1R, I actually tune the low end shelf down just a touch, then I've boosted a few areas of the higher range to bring a perception of more detail in strings/piccolos/triangles etc.

Because the Z1R is already quite bassy, to get the mild v-shape I am after, this EQ curve works with the head phone's native FR to achieve it.

I haven't heard them, but I own the T1.2 that had similar criticisms and boosting 2500khz by a few dbs fixed the missing warmth in vocals which was the only thing I felt they weren't doing for me.

At the end of the day you get high tier technicalities at a lower price, as long as you can EQ or tubefy the sound to your preference and be happy.

Which is why I kinda wanna try the HD8XX to try and defuckify their mids with the sticker mod/EQ and save a grand.
