This is a specific issue with Abyss, not planars in general. Hifiman don't have a peak there.

The Arya is probably already "high-end" but it's not there in their TOTL stuff either:

Nor do "high-end headphones in general".

Audeze (planar) and Focal (dynamic drivers) can have a slight emphasis there, on some headphones, but it's not Abyss level, and it's typically not centered on 1kHz either, it's a bit higher or lower.

I have two Audeze including the LCD-X and I do think EQ is a must, but it's more to do with the uneven and recessed upper mids than what's going on in the lower mids. I use a slightly tweaked Oratory1990 profile which does EQ down 760Hz but only by 1dB. There is maybe a slight honk that is reduced by EQing this out. But much larger issues in the upper mids where it is very muffled without EQ. Utopia the slight rise centered at ~1.2kHz really doesn't bother me. Both it and the Clear sound very similar tonally to the HD650/HD6XX, just better. HD6XX and Utopia are probably the two headphones I find most usable without EQ.

These are bright sounding headphones, which generally get the dankpods seal of approval. I usually like the headphones he likes, and these are no exception. They’re not perfect, in the warmer months they make my head sweat, and they squeeze my big head too much if I don’t get them on exactly right. They also do lack bass. But hey, for as cheap as I got them, they’re gonna stick around!

Do 650 pads fit the 600? The yaxi pads are originally for the 650.I used Alcantara(Yaxi), cow leather(Zmf) and sheeps/lamb leather (Zmf), but only on the darker/less neutral 650.

The Yaxi's were the closest to original. It does add a bit of bass but the rest of the spectrum sounded reasonably like the original sound. The different material will never quite sound the same but this was close enough for me and a lot closer than leather.

The sheep/lamb ones did change the sound overall. The different frequencies still had the same balance to each other but something about the overall sound did definitely change. It's like the whole spectrum is in a different tone. Its do-able but not a lot of positives. I've sworn to never use velour so I'm partial to using the sheep leather pads but it feels slightly out of necessity. I assume fenestrated will do better.

The cow leather ones change a lot about the sound. These pads make the headphone a lot darker and shift the timbre to the bass area. I have the 650 which is already quite dark so I don't know how it would sound with the 600. The change might not be as fitting. This option also requires often eq changes depending on what you are listening to. I'm in love with them but this route if definitely not for everyone.

The Yaxi alcantara pads would be the first I would try. They still have fabric but its not comparable to the velour. They are quite open and deep so likely no/little contact with the ear. For the ZMF leather options I would favor the deep oval's over the ori's. The combination of leather and shallower pads are bit too much and sound congested/blurred.

Not all velour is same. Sennheiser velour has short felt and light. I like it. I have tried other velour on Beyer DT700 Pro. Very thick and heavy. Hot and sweaty.

I can tolerate shitty earphones but what really drives me insane is asymmetry, if getting my ears cleaned doesn't help that might be my only option though

Did find another thread where someone said the Arias have "piercing treble" and that might be an apt description

Maybe I'll feel the same about them when I get mine cleaned
