My immediate question exactly.

I've been in the hobby for a few years now and have had several mid-fi big guns like HD 650, K712 Pro and others. Sold mostly everything except my original HD 598 SR (still the ones who get the most use because of gaming) and Porta Pros. Eventually bought a pair of 560S for music paired with my K5 Pro. Never looked back, never feel any need to upgrade anymore. They really are spectacularly competent, defined and resolving. I like them infinitely more than I did the 6 series and honestly you get to a point in the hobby where you're just spending money out of curiosity with very little payoff.

I realise this is easier said than done but do try to appreciate and be content with what you have if it is factually already top tier.

Now that I'm gaming with a Schiit stack in the living room, I sometimes miss my old K712 Pro. They sounded a little artificially wide and clinical for music listening but they'd be the balls with that setup. Comfort was also pretty good, only the build lacked a little.

Glad you're enjoying your 702.

So, from sennheiser you have a few choices, the 6xx, 600, 650, and 660s. The 6xx, 600, and 650 have a darker tone and definitely need an AMP. 660s is great with or without and AMP and personally I like the 660s the best. I highly suggest the focal elex since you like the sennheiser house sound. You’d notice the difference between the 660s and focal elex pretty quick.

If you don't mind some pretty heavy EQ, the koss esp 95x with oratory eq is one of the best headphones I've heard and they're not that expensive. Sure they look and feel cheap and build quality is atrocious and they break a lot but they sound incredible. They do need EQ though they sound weird and compressed without it. Being electrostatic they take EQ really really well. Genuine no questions asked lifetime warranty as well.

Thank you very much, currently I have an eq set up in roon, and I was looking for something that would work system wide so I'll definitely give that a shot. I'm going through and trying to find music to listen to now, it's interesting my music taste has broadened a bit with the new headphones.

I don't get the 3 blob staging off the 660s, but still similarly small. Got the 3 blob on the 600 and 58x though.

OG Clears have similar overall presentation in that it's mid-forward and small stage, but imo quite different otherwise. It's much more intense in character and doesn't have much of that smooth and pleasant timbre of the 6x0's.

Clears have more wow factor with its punchiness and detail, but also was less forgiving and more fatiguing.

Very nice, congrats. I have the HD58X and a FiiO amp but it sounds brilliant as well. Have some family visiting and time off so I want to stay up late; been using my setup a lot at night and it just never gets old.

In case you want to tailor the sound a little, there's always Equalizer APO (amazing bit of software) and the Peace frontend makes it easier to use, https://sourceforge.net/projects/peace-equalizer-apo-extension/ - you can save and import profiles and such, and more easily dial in frequencies. I like to basically just boost the 10-80 Hz ranges to give the headphones that little extra body to the sound.

This is a system-wide equalizer so it affects everything you play and is kind of set it and forget it.

You can also have a separate profile for speakers, and swap between the presets with hotkeys.

Im coming from an DT990 and tried to replace them many times, I’ve tried audeze (too bulky), the DT 900 Pro (too veiled) and many others but always ended up with the DT990.

Today I finally got my Focal Radiance. I’ll try to give my very first subjective impression of them. It’s a very lightly used unit (even the plastic wrap was still on the connectors). Got it for 740 bucks.

Build: I like the materials but it’s too creaky for my taste. It’s not really a problem when worn but it creaks and pops a lot when handling. Cable is a joke, really stiff and short. If this is one of the better focal cables I don’t wanna imagine what the others are like. But overall it’s built very well, I just don’t feel like it can survive quite as much abuse as my Beyers did.

Comfort:
Comfort is really good, it has got quite a clamp on the head but I will get used to it. The pads are pretty soft and feel quality with the perfect amount of give. The leather quality is INSANE. I also didn't have the common Focal problem of my ears touching the metal grill even though I have humongous ears.

Sound:
They didn't WOW me like the Audeze LCD-2C did but it's more of a HD650 effect where I think that you would appreciate them more and more the longer you listen.

I thought these would be way bassier and warmer than my DT990s but I actually found them to be tuned kinda similar. The Radiance has more energy in the upper mids which makes the transition to the treble much more natural. Also the bass isn’t louder but much more defined. I immediately tried mixing a few projects where I had some troubles getting the bass right and it was a breeze with the Focals. Vocals come across more natural and not extra sparkly like on the DT990s.

Weirdly enough I can make out a LOT more details in the treble even though it's more relaxed overall.

Transients are way snappier on the Focals, for example the song „Snake Ice“ by JonatanLeandoer96 has many percs and transient heavy drum hits and they sound kind of mashed together on my old beyers.

They just sound neutral and right, soundstage is pretty small but that’s to be expected from a closed back and I actually like a more intimate sound.

Overall:

I am pleased with them, I will test them in different scenarios today and report back. Will they send my DT990s into retirement? I don’t know yet but we will see. If I end up selling them again I will try the Aeon Noir or the legendary HD800.

Edit: Just listened to Playboi Carti - Whole Lotta Red (I know not everyones taste) and man the Radiance BLEW MY MIND. Loud growling bass, screaming synths and demented vocals is exactly where they excel. I felt like carti was screaming in my face from the top of his lungs and the bass dragged me deep into hell, couldn't stop nodding my head to the music. Had to fire up Teardown for the full experience of destroying stuff while listening to this. Gotta get some death grips going next.
