Let me hijack this discussion, if that's ok with you, and ask a couple questions about the HD599:

  1. What benefits can I hope to achieve from amping them? I normally plug them either into my phone or my laptop and they are okayish but I'd say they lack body -- way too much treble, not enough of the rest. I tried EQ-ing them based on AutoEq profiles (with some experimentation) but somehow I liked the sound even less.
  2. I see a lot of praise for their comfort but for me they are a torture device. I can use them for maybe an hour, two is a stretch. The pads feel hard and itchy. What am I doing wrong? What are some other headphones you are comparing them to?

Ouch, I sound way more negative than I actually feel about them, just don't know how to explain myself better. :/

Roland RH-A30 headphones, Fosi Audio Q4 and a 2022 Kindle Fire HD 8, streaming from Amazon Unlimited. This will end up going to my office next week. It's nice to have some tunes to listen to while I work!

Hardware cost me less than $350, and it sounds pretty great. Not too shabby!

So far I like them, but have to use them for a little longer to make sure. Just curious what other people think about them. I know that I probably would be better off with the Q30's especially when they are discounted ( I actually bought the Q30's for a gift when they were discounted but when I wanted to get them they were only sold for the full price, but the Q45's were discounted so I decided to get them instead).

I have the 109’s. Love them. Very pleasant tuning out of the box, I like the little bump in the mid-bass, the bass extension and that extra “air” in the upper treble. Mids are great and not drowned out. Imaging and soundstage are also good. Comfort and looks are top notch.

It will work, but will sound like sh!t. If you are looking for a practice amp, I'd suggest digital amps (if it's not too late). Used Blackstars ID series, Boss Katana, Yamaha THR etc. They don't sound amazing, but still fine for what they are (talking purely about headphones out).

Yeah, I’ll definitely have to try them out before. It’s too much money to buy them based on looks alone, and I’d want to try through different sets to see which one fits me best. Maybe I’ll make the journey to try them out next year.
