Eh, I personally wouldn’t use open back headphones at work. They provide practically no isolation, so if it’s a noisy environment your music will be fighting to drown out the noise, if it’s a quiet environment it’ll bug coworkers who will hear whatever you’re listening to. Closed backs or in-ears are better suited, unless you need to hear your surroundings.

I've read many posts about the Sennheiser Momentum 4 not working correctly. Decided to buy one anyway.

So far, I've never had any trouble with the connection itself. But in 'settings' in the smart control app, it often says 'no audio codec', and I get no sound. I have to reconnect a few times until it, for some reason, decides to select 'SBC', and then it works fine.

In the developer settings on my phone (Nokia 6), 'bluetooth audio codec' option is on 'force SBC'. The smart control app just shows the audio codec it's using, but you can't change it. Is there any way to always connect using the SBC codec?

I’ve used those to DJ for 20ish years, and I’d say they have just the right amount of bass. Sure they don’t cover the lower frequencies as well as HPs with larger drivers, but the sound signature on the 25’s work perfectly in the dj booth where I prefer to hear tighter kick drums.

The problem, if you’re not careful, is that you crank them up quite loud and not experience any distortion or immediate discomfort … which could lead to hearing issues down the road. I’m guessing this is what happened to you? You can’t blame the headphones though, honestly.

Cable makes no difference and particularly not on a planar with a totally flat impedance curve as this does. If you went from a single ended cable to balanced, it's possible the balanced output on your amp is better but it's because it gives you access to that then, not because of the cable construction.

The stock Hifiman cables are annoying, although I think they might be better now on the more recent HE1000V2s. I have replaced the cables on all my Hifimans with stuff that handles better. Sounds no different though.

The different HD25 versions haven't changed that much over the years, though. The older HD25-1 did have a slightly more pronounced midbass hump than seen in the graph above, by not by a huge amount.

Here are some older plots done by Tyll Herstens some years ago that feature the version you have against the K701 again.
