I recently switched from Samsung Galaxy to Google Pixel. Problem is that the Pixel - unlike galaxy devices - does not have Dolby Atmos support. My question is: Are there any Dolby enabled DAC's ouy there that can help me play Dolby content, and thus bypassing the Pixel's lack of Dolby support? In other words: Does the Dolby encoding happen to the signal before it gets sent to the DAC for conversion or does it happen on the device first, and then gets sent to the DAC?

I’d say it’s the opposite of most high end headphones. Most are master of one aspect but lack in others. Like the HD800s have great soundstage but lack bass, LCD-X have great sound but lack soundstage etc. The 109s on the other hand aren’t the best of perfect in any way, instead it’s very good at most things. A Jack of all trades master of none if you will. So for me as a student, that’s exactly what i need.

But they also have a trick up their sleeves. They lie like nothing else. They’re like an insurance salesman crossed with a televangelist. Even horrible underground metal or rap recordings sound good on them. It’s like they’re somehow not revealing and have great detail. Like, my best recordings sound just as good with all the details as they did on my LCD-X, and at the same time my worst black metal recordings that were unbearable on the X sound mesmerizing on these.

I guess I see it more as...you went over to Guga's and he made you one of his A5s, and you whip out a bottle of HP sauce. So, sure...it's "wrong" but it's also pretty delicious.

I'd also note, you hear partially with your eyes and 100% with your mind, so if glowing tubes and a VU meter and more boxes and cables, that hot, static smell...appeal, no you can't get that with software.

Thanks StarWarder - my search-fu clearly isn't very good! 🙈 I did some research on the PS Audio Stellar, and didn't come across anything as useful. For example, I found this to be fully convincing as endorsement of this product. Here is another one, oh dear! Lesson learned here - I need to be more cautious.

I wonder if I might end up testing the patience of Sluggish Shop One - they are unlikely to stock the DAC/amps in that chart. I might see if I can give them the Audeze business and then just buy the rest of the stuff from the web. So much for my wanting to use bricks 'n mortar stores! 😬

For what it's worth, I wonder if my faith in shop demos is now rather dented, only a few weeks into my project. My audiophile ears are nothing if not unpractised, and could end up buying a cans/amp stack that spends too much money or leaves too much performance on the table. This stuff, it turns out, is rather harder than it looks.

It's sort of hard to second guess the engineer studio. All the EQ in the world and the HE1 won't turn old recordings of The Great Gildersleeve into Avatar 2 in Atmos

Out of all the headphones I have (6xx, r70x, clear og, arya) the HD800s has noticeably the widest soundstage with nearly the best imaging as well (the Arya Stealth's are slightly better). As for cheaper options, I believe that the AKG K702 or K712 comes close in soundstage width but may be lacking in other areas. Idk if Arya's really complement the HD800S well, they both sound similar except Arya's have more bass. If you want HD800S for just music, I'd pass if you already have the Arya's. If you want them for gaming/movies, I'd say it's worth considering.

The bass, when EQ'd, on the LCD-X is this heavy deep big club kind of sound that doesn't particularly lack detail, but is a bit slower than could be. The HE6se V2 doesn't lose in any aspect and it's extremely fast and detailed. The best I've heard. In many ways better than LCD-5 which has gorgeous and effortless, but not as technical bass.

Budget - 200 - 400€

Source - Elgato Wave XLR or a dac

Requirements for Isolation - not really. only used at home. Shouldnt be heard when using a mic, but I dont use my headphones at 100dB :D

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Nope

Preferred Type of Headphone - Full - Sized over ear

Preferred tonal balance - Balanced and suitable for my needs, I dont need bass boosted like Beats for instance.

Past headphones - DT 770 Pro 250Ohm, MMX 300 and Hörluchs HL5210

Preferred Music - Electronic Music and Metal most of the time

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - My MMX 300 are only used for work and I dont want to wear IEM all the time.

My DT770 Pro are kinda broke after many years of usage, so I need a new allround Headphone for Music, Voice stuff and also Gaming.

Took a look at the DT 700 Pro X and 900 Pro X as well as the Hifiman Sundara, but I cannot try them out nearby, so I need kinda advice for new daily drivers.

I am located in Germany, so EU Availability would be kinda nice.

Don't use any of them, they are automatically generated from those people's measurements to AutoEQ's Harman-but-not-quite-Harman target and are generally not very good.

As Oratory1990 has measured them, he has a number of Harman-actually-Harman presets for that headphone with different pads, use one of those instead.
