Man that sucks. You have to wait for the new tubes to be run in before it will sound good again

Personally for me the Sundara feels like a teaser before the real end game. Everything sounds very good and natural but I feel everything could be better. But I'm done with the Sundara because there is no reason to spend more than 350$ for headphones overall. If you have enough resources, you may try something different, but correlation between price and sound quality is gonna be far from the optimal. Maybe Edition XS is worth the money and very good for the price but I haven't tried it and won't do it.
I heard an interesting opinion that people who buy flagship items are mostly investing directly in the company and their future products. If you like HifiMan and want to support them, something like Ananda or Arya would be your next end game.

So I didn't even know they had the open box deal available, I was under the impression I would have to pay full MSRP but the owner told me they had open box for a 200 pound discount. I'd suggest not going to the store I did because the owner was a total snob and not that pleasant, I think he only gave me the open box because I wasn't that impressed by the in store demo.

Homie...
LITERALLY NO ONE has an example of what "detail" is.
Detail is like Bigfoot. They all pretend as though its there and assure you that they know how it looks but they actually cannot show you evidence.
I am not shouting boogeyman, mate. I am GENUINELY angry that everyone just accepts it that a term, which NOONE as a clear and precise definition, nor an example for, is used as a differentiator between headphones.
Imagine me differentiating cars based on their "schlorpiness". I can feel how schlorpy a car is, after the first five minutes, trust me.

You know, I resent snake oil as much as the next guy, but in my opinion this statement is going too far. Detail is as much a made up term as any other descriptor we have to talk about our hobby. We may not know yet what aspects of a frequency response to attribute to this quality, but we can still experience it, and we need to be able to talk about it without the need to shout boogeyman.

Sounds like you got a good deal with the open box! do you mind saying where you got them from? I'm UK-based and have been keeping an eye out for a deal on the LCD-X for a while now but haven't found anything that good

Sundara are great for 300 dollars, but they are lacking in certain aspects. Their soundstage is very strange, they seperate instruments well, and can image to some extent, but there is something unnatural about where exactly it positions sounds (for me anyway). They do lack some sub bass compared to other planars. And to me, their round earpads are plain uncomfortable.
But if you are happy, there is no reason to upgrade right away. I didn't get a straight upgrade until I bought some Meze109s for 900 dollars (Norway pricing, around $700 USD in normal countries). Edition XS is better overall, but that's more of something to consider for those who don't already own Sundaras.

get a pair of good IEMs or one nice closed back headphone. Though, good IEMs with proper sound and a good seal will cost much less than a closed back headphone that does a similiar job.
You won't be able to enjoy anything open back. You will hear things from the outside and making your headphones louder will basically make everyone else hear everything. A lose - lose situation.

I quite liked the sound of the ATH-E70, but I've also never really listened to any other IEMs. So I have nothing to compare them to.

I've had a look at the video and tried out the eq setting he did. My impression is still that the XS sounds pretty damn fine without eq. It's of course worth a try though. Btw I also listen to metal a lot and also sometimes even use the XS for practicing guitar, to me it's fine.

One of the reasons was the comfort level. Sundara can be uncomfortable for larger ears (like mine). The details across the entire spectrum of sound was much better too. For its price, Sundara is very good though. I recently added Focal Clear to my collection which is absolutely stellar, but the msrp price tag is 1400 usd, so it’s to be expected.

That could be it. My experience comes from having quite a few ~$100 iems that I've listened to for a while and just getting the IE600. Makes sense that the perception of detail would be a side effect of other things.
