I have a DAC with a usb mini input, I want to use it with my Mac & iPhone should I:

  • get an adapter: male USB mini to USB-C adapter
  • Get a usb mini - usb a cable, with a dual dongle with lightning and type C male
  • Get a usb mini - usb c cable, with a lightning male - usb mini adapter

Or something else entirely.

I recently rejoined the IEM / headphone hobby and picked these three units up. I’m pretty happy with all three. The B2 Dusk is my fav, but I’m wildly impressed with how good the Hexa is for $80. It’s going into my bag as EDC, the B2 gets desk use and the Zero is coming out when I want a change.

I regret buying an AKG k7XX, for the price that they were the build quality and tonality was awful. I have since sold this for a tenth of price i bought it for.

I also regret buying an AudioEngine D1 DAC as that really didn't make a difference in sound quality compared to my onboard audio and didn't really offer any more volume. Although the optical input was handy sometimes.

Apart from that don't have any other regretful purchases.

Critical listening is a learned skill, not some inborn genetic talent. I think anyone with healthy hearing should be able to tell the difference between good and bad if they take the time to learn to what to listen for, meaning anyone who can't simply needs to put in some effort. Does instrument X sound louder than instrument Y in this track, or are they equally loud? is hardly Kaballist esoterica.

I have no regrets about spending money on stuff that I use for hours on most days.

If you want, save up for a simple tube amp. They tend to up the holographic quality and instrument separation noticeably. Especially on high bit rate sources, OST, jazz, classical, binaural, etc…. My rig is iBasso DAP —> Schitt Lokius (typically set to +5 dB bass shelf and - 4 dB near 6k, but it’s nice to be able to reach out and just twist to flavor on the fly) —> schitt Valhalla II (High gain).

I got the Dekoni hybrid elite pads and I won’t go back. They couple better to my head, adding a bit of bass (maybe 2 dB), attenuates the 6k peak a bit (1-2 dB), widens the stage L/R but squeezes it a bit U/D and F/B.

I honestly can’t image better results with out shelling out many thousands more on gear, near perfect for me

That’s the beauty of owning several cans. I love throwing on the LCD-X for a couple hours here and there to get that primo bass and slam, but they come right off and I can swap over to the HD800S. If I’m traveling or at the office, it’s my two closed backs (Celestee and Aeon 2C). But rotating through always keeps thing fresh and keeps me from buying something too crazy (cough Susvara, cough cough 1266 TC)

I used the HD600 with an atom stack and it is indeed veiled (to my ears). That’s just the sound signature. Maybe with a high end tube amp or mods it goes away but it doesn’t need to be “under powered” to sound underwhelming. It depends on the individual’s tastes and preferences

Can't give input on old vs. new, but I will warn that the protective grille is more delicate than you might expect, being paper-like. It's not a problem most of the time, but you need to be very careful with using the wire loop end of a hearing aid cleaner to scrape out debris, as poking the grille with it is likely to end with a punctured filter and a $200 fee for a 10-cent part replacement if your unit isn't covered under warranty.

Not sure whether their new cable is different, but the case isn't an issue if you switch to a flexible third-party cable without memory wire. I use a 2-pin from DUNU, although I'm uncertain whether that model's still being sold.

I regret not picking up the LCD 2C for $450 from audeze's b stock sale this past black Friday. I don't really regret what I've bought so far (560s, Tripowin Olina, SMSL C200) since I got them all for a pretty decent price for new, though I probably could have gotten away with going for used, so maybe my regret is not keeping up with the used market.

The Chu.was the first Moondrop product I purchased. Neutrally tuned? Perhaps. For me it is one of the most fatiguing pair of IEMs that is now collecting dust in a drawer after only a handful of sessions while I usually really enjoy to buy,.try and drive new IEMs.

Had no quality issues with them but was very much underwhelmed, even "for the price". No way that I am going to burn more of my hair cells on the LAN..

I don't regret the sound or the experience because they're gorgeous but I ended up not liking the Meze 99s because the cable was so goddamn noisy.
They sounded fine for the price, and again, they were beautiful to look at, but at the end of the day I didn't enjoy having them on my head, so I ended up selling them.
Other cans I've been disappointed with (Beyerdynamic DT 770s, e.g.) I've returned within the return window, but I so wanted to love the Mezes that I held on to them until I ran out of space.
As a whole (i.e. not talking specific models I've been disappointed by), I now have a couple pairs in the $500 range and I think that's about as expensive as I'll ever need to go. My whole collection is sub-$2000 and I will continue to pretty much buy what I want when I want, as I've budgeted for my hobbies so I don't have to feel weird about spending money on them.
