I was running Hifiman Deva Pro on my PC with a Soundblaster SC with a discrete headphone amp and it sounded ok. I don't have a huge budget so I bought a JDS Labs Atom DAC+ and Atom Amp+ and it sounds significantly better.

If there is no background "hiss" you are fine. Most people started to buy dacs because of that hissing sound. Nowadays you can even get an apple dongle and solve it, even though it won't be enough to power R70xs.

I mean, I don't have this motherboard, I'm just extrapolating from my experience with similar ones and the concrete numbers I can find for the audio chipset they use, but I would try it before spending more money. The main problem with onboard sound tends to be noise/interference but the ATs aren't too sensitive so I doubt that will be an audible issue.
Then there's the question of power/headroom. The ALC1220 chip (some guy measured it to put out 1.3Vrms into 600ohms, which we can estimate will get the R70Xs to about 105dB peak SPL) will definitely get it loud enough for *me*, but maybe not for you, since I don't know how loud you listen and what you listen to.

If you're enjoying the sound of the headphones, not hearing noise or distortion, and able to reach your desired listening level, don't worry about purchasing dedicated equipment for the time being.

The fiio looks like a decent solution, too. Haven't tried it yet.

Sorry, I forgot about the title because of the big picture. I've never tried this pair but it looks decent so far. If you like it, I would leave it like it is. But you are defenately missing something. A good start point would be an iFi Zen DAC. But you can also go directly for something like the shiit stack.

Reply to Fostex TH900mk2 White Noise by Bob_Scotwell
You're comparing a closed-back headphone to an open-back. Is it possible you're just hearing the "reverb" sound of a closed environment? In other words, if you plug your ears, you will hear "white noise" that is simply the trapped sound waves bouncing around in your ears. I wonder if that's what you're hearing. Are you sure the noise is coming from the drivers?

So I went to Can Jam NYC this past weekend. I had a few items on my agenda, one being the XS. The demo unit only had a balanced connector and the amp I brought was only 1/4" so I didn't use my setup. But HiFiman had them connected to their dac amp so I thought all was good. They didn't sound anything like anyone here or elsewhere describes. Plus I had to turn the amp almost completely max to get any kind of volume. I was so disappointed. Not sure if they were a bad pair, the amp was bad or something else. I love my 4XXs and really wanted to love these, but the whole experience was a key down. After that I went into the ZMF room and those pretty much ruined everything else lol. I do want to give the XS one more chance though.

Neutral bright sounding which to me is pretty boring, but still sounds pretty good. I've had two pair - the first iteration and the second updated model. I feel like the first iteration were better and more comfortable than the revision they recently did, so if you can get a pair, I'd recommend trying to track down the first iteration.

Poweramp Equaliser is a PEQ with fully customisable bands. It's also quite cheap so worth a try just in case it does end up working for you. I use it for Spotify both online and offline without any problems. Didn't know that Tidal offline was so unnecessarily restrictive...

Reply to comment by gjmallory in Are these fake? cable feel cheap and the connection isn't flush by EveatHORIZON
The more I look the faker they seem, I didn't pay for these my drummer gave em to me and I knew something wasn't right as I have 435 and these somehow sound worse.
The cable also broke today when I was taking a bud off, I think they were only attached with the wires themselves, zero reinforcement.
The more I compare them to the 425 the faker they seem too, the 425 seem so luxurious compared to these 535s and they are €200 cheeper, no way these 535s are real. I've sent photos to shure, I'll update when I've more info.

I'd still buy a basic dac/amp combo for extra peace of mind, knowing that my pc will never mess with the sound I'll be hearing. Also the physical volume knob is a nice addition
