Might take a bit of digging. I could find the 75s, but somehow not the 40s over here (europe can suck a bit to find headphones sometimes). But the us amazon usually comes through anyway.

Honestly, if it makes him happy, budget doesn't matter. I already spend too much on my hobbies anyway (shop had a nice discount on the moondrop variations...I had to), so if I can find them, worth it. Or just order the 30i from Drop. The 75s might not be hist cup of tea with the clip on.

Thanks for the suggestion, always happy to look into new headphones I don't know much about :) Only found the Grado cause I was looking for dedicated audiobook cans myself

Yeah I totally get it, it's definitely a different experience at home with my nice cans. Although I will say that the stock stereo on my 2008 Honda sounds quite good, imo. So driving to and from work isn't always bad lol.

The conversation went something like this~

Colleague: "Hey, you listen to any music?"

Me: "Yes ofc I listen to music daily."

Colleague: "Yeah I got the new apple headphones, the noise canceling are crazy and sounds so good."

Me: "That's cool, I listen to music on my headphone also every now and then."

Colleague: "How come I never see you wear them to work?"

Me: "They're wired so it'd be inconvenient to bring them."

Colleague: "Why not just some good wireless headphones?"

Me: "Well they sound really good."

Colleague: "How much they cost?"

Me: "umm.. they're pretty expensive I'll say."

Colleague: "What, $400? 500?"

Me: "A little over 3k."

Colleague: "Why would you spend that much on a wired headphoen?" 😐😐

Me: "It sounds good."

End of conversation.

Expierenced that one first hand. Laser eye surgery gone wrong, was blind on that eye for a few days and the pain prevented me from opening the other eye for more than a few seconds. Sitting in a dark room 24/7 without being able to do anything makes you crazy. Had just enough time to start an audiobook and at least have something to listen to for a few hours. Now I mostly use them when I have to drive long distances for several hours. Makes the highway a lot more interesting.

I will check it out, thanks. I wasn't claiming that you consider it as the bible, mine was just a consideraton. I agree on your definition.

But recently I did a test with all my HPs. For each one, I compared (obv with matched pre-gain volumes) the Oratory preset with another Oratory preset but with some modificaton based on my tastes and with a third preset, built looking to compensated FR graphs and simply correcting manually all spikes and dips. The results shows that Oratory preset were never pleasing and accurate as mine. Did the test also with a friend that is a sound engineer and House music producer (more trained ears than mine) and while he retains that Oratory presets are more balanced than stock sound, he also finds that my personal presets sound more linear and accurate. With oratory presets I usually perceive too much bass, voices are laid back and highs are a little bit "muted".

That's crazy, my KSC75x sounds like something that came with a tape player in the 80's. They can't hold a candle to my Elac Debut Reference speakers and I have terrible acoustics and zero room treatment. Very rarely even bother listening to the speakers because they sound bad.

The AirHead portable headphone amp boosts the output and sound quality of the puny amplifiers in iPods and MP3 and portable CD players--and it works like a charm, although some users may find it too bulky. HeadRoom sells the AirHead online for $149.

This little amp is nonetheless slightly larger than an iPod--it measures 2.875 inches wide, 1 inch high, and 4.125 inches deep, and it weighs less than a pound fully loaded with 4 AAA batteries. That extra heft helps explain why the AirHead so easily betters the flyweight amps built into portable players.

4 AAA batteries babyyy
