Tonality (at least to me) is the balance between bass, treble and midrange. DT700 has a balanced ratio between these three but DT770 has more bass and treble than it has midrange. Detail retrieval is kind of self explanatory, it's how much nuances and fine details you can extract and hear from the music. (sorry for my bad English).

You probably could, but if you've got micro-usb, then the apple dongle probably isn't your huckleberry. If you have a headphone jack, I'd just rock that for now, and if you don't, I'd see what the Android folk suggest.

It's boomy in the bass and has a huge 3kHz spike. I got it acceptable with EQ but never loved it; for a TOTL headphone, the sound is not great. It does have great soundstage for a closed back and is very comfortable.

The bass after EQ is good... but it's not as good as open backs like the LCD-X, HE6SEV2, even the Hifiman Arya or Edition XS. While Focal (Clear, Utopia) are punchier, the bass on the Z1R is distinctly pillowy and undefined.

It sort of decided for me that I don't need closed back headphones, I use IEMs if I need the isolation. I actually swapped it for a Shure KSE1500 which also needs EQ, but is so much better. I have the IER-Z1R as well, it's much better.

The HD800S is not my cup of tea at all for metal. I was in between headphones at one point and had only the HD800S while I was waiting on a different pair to ship. The HD800S was so incredibly fatiguing for metal.

If you already have the XS, I’d probably just stretch and get a LCD-3.

As a sweaty FPS gamer, I will say that the HD800S is a bit overrated. The improvement over other headphones is not massive.

The HD560S is 120Ω and quite high sensitivity, many people report running it off a phone fine and the AZ09 Pro has more power than most phones, even more so in high power mode (triple click on the left). I don't have the HD560s but it almost certainly would have enough power for them.

I have the 660s and I just got the 6XX... can't tell a difference between them on any source. I think I'm just broken or don't listen to the right songs. I dunno.

Straight out of iPhone with dongle is fine on both. Plugged into 3V RMS Mac, they're both fine. I don't notice any distortion anywhere with either one.

I regularly delve into both communities and here's some interesting stuff I found:

  1. Unlike mechanical keyboards, Headphones transducer and their pads account for more than 95% of the sound you'll be hearing. Difference from anything else in the chain (cables, DACs, amps, etc.) is miniscule and when present, will be nowhere as exciting as simply buying another pair of headphones. You'll also need a music source of decent quality, of course.
  2. EQing your cans to a single FR target is comparable to putting foam into your keyboards. It might improve the sound, but you'll be making all your different headphones sounds very similar, if not exactly the same. When EQing, try to just tinker with what you feel the headphone is most lacking and leave the rest stock.
  3. Keyboard mounting styles (gasket, top mount,) is comparable to transducers type (Dynamic, planar, electrostats). Different flavors for different people, and tuning one type to sounds like another is not easy.
  4. Sennheiser HD6x lineup is the Cherry MX of the headphones, Old but gold. Whereas you'll only find vintage cherry mx users in the deep end, old mate senny is often recommended here. Also they last forever.
  5. open-back headphones are perfect for listening to both your music and your keyboard. The classic argument "you won't hear them (the keyboard sounds) because you'll be using headphones anyway" doesn't apply with open backs.
