Troll might be his style but if you ignore the spicy takes and hyperboles, he's actually science based. At the end of the day, can't fault the man for demanding objectivist perfection. And he can support his arguments too. Might wanna check out his latest video.

Where I sit next to my window in my garage, which overall is the only ideal place to sit, with my $600 studio monitors, I can barely hear kick drums because 50-60 hz is nulled out. Also, another considerable dip around 120hz... Not an easy fix there and kind of a deal breaker for a lot of the music I listen to.

For roughly the same amount of money, I can have HD650s with a tube amp and use Ghz's CanOpener + a slight room reverb plugin to get an amazing, and consistent performance anywhere in the room. No, I can't feel the lower hz with the headphones, but I can at least hear them, and I don't feel them with the monitors anyway. Also, I can lay in the hammock with the same HD650s and a Qudelix and get pretty close sound quality, but with the benefit of being in a hammock.

So, yeah, if you have the room for it, speakers are great! But IMO the headphones win hands-down if you don't have a good room.

Was looking for a new pair of closed backs and got these a couple days ago second hand and I have read this series is very popular among the modding community but I didn't realise how much modding these can change the sound, I slapped some new pads on these and they sound gorgeous with a good slam in the bass and crisp highs, the mids are a bit recessed but I think that is to do with the pads as they where less so with the stock pads.

I don't see many of these on here but these are great would recommend :)

Not sure what went wrong with the pair OP has, or where the incompatibility lies. I'm listening to my pair right now and they are simply very good headphones.

Bass is very it should be for my taste and is not boomy - that would show with the dub techno playing at the moment. Soundstage is not particularly wide, sure, but instrument placement is quite precise. I recently even listened to a full symphony with them, and that is normally where I switch to the HD800. Not the same experience, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

No matter what you use to create the sound you are only sensing what happens at your two ears - so if headphones could faithfully recreate what you would hear from any number of speakers you could recreate the experience. HRTF and other computational methods try to do that with various levels of success
