T40rp don't isolate very well even though they're closed cans. Only a little more than T50rp. Stuff like DT770 isolates better.

Fair enough you do make a good point, I just don't agree with you lol. By OPs description of the sound I would prefer it too and that convinces me that they are functioning very well.

Check out Custom Cans on youtube. They have a video about tuning. There's also a thread on Head-fi

Pads get you 90% there, but they need to be the right ones. SRH840 earpads work for me.

To me it's more like these things are unrelated. The guy likes the sound, but it's not how they were designed. You get more bass and it changes the image, but that's a different tuning.

They're wired backwards so that they invert the signal (allegedly... this seems like the kind of thing that might vary depending on who's on the workshift at the factory that night). Ie, a sound that starts with an increase in sound pressure at the mic starts with a pressure vacuum at the eardrum, assuming phase was preserved through the recording. It's theoretically audible but as long as its inverted the same way in both ears, really not a significant issue with real-world audio content.

I just purchased the Schiit Hel and I'm pretty impressed, it is my first day/amp situation

I know they are 120 ohms and not 300 ohms like HD600/650 but I would not consider 120 to be a low ohms headphone. More generally, it is an explanation for why they sound better out of OPs moderately high output impedance headphone jack.

400SE is really a solid headphone. The X4 is basically its twin brother from Drop and can be sometimes had for a little cheaper. (I wouldn't really worry about which one is better as most will not be able to tell them apart so I wouldn't worry about missing out on something by choosing one or the other)
I would recommend some kind of dongle dac/amp at a minimum as I found my own desktop (alienware r13) to sound rather bland.
When I say Dongle Dac/amp I mean something a bit more robust than a apple dongle. While an apple dongle is not bad sounding per say and noticeably better quality than my desktop PC, it doesn't quite do the headphone justice.
I'm a bit fond of my Creative SXFI AMP dongle with the 400se (without SXFI enabled). I'm sure the latest wave of cheap dongles like the 7hz, Shio, iFi Go Link and such are probably all fine. I'd shoot for a Qudelix 5k if budget allows which makes for a great computer dac/amp in my opinion. For those that already have a full sized desktop dac/amp, you already have all you need unless for whatever reason your gear makes the headphone sound muffled and flat or you can't get enough volume. The volume ranges I listen at are around 65-75dB with peaks into 85dB. I do not usually use EQ with the 400se as I think it sounds good as is but sometimes a boost in bass to add a little warmth hits the spot when the mood strikes.

Glad to see that the K5 is still alive and well. This was my first decent amp. I used to use cheap topping tp-30 just to amplify my Fidelio X2 but compared to the K5, that amp is far from sounding clean. After the K5 I decided to upgrade to the Topping E50 & L50, which disappoint me yet again. So far topping is nothing but disappointment but the K5 will always be remembered as a great entry level DAC/Amp for me.

HD560s is not very high-ohmic. It's in the middle. It's definitely not designed for high impedance outputs. 120 ohm or (whatever it has) is around the output of many of those headphone outs. Also the HD500 line has been 50ohm since I remember.
Portable amps with automatic gain read HD560s as a low impedance load.

What do you mean by inverse polarity?

The Shure SRH840a had a very fun v-shape sound from what I remember when I had it. Great sound under $200. Last year, it was even down to $100 USD, crazy. My biggest problem is similar to most closed backs, where I can't keep them on over an hour due to heat. Also the inner earcup would touch my ears. I still do prefer the HD600 when it comes to sound though.

I was gonna get it but the inverse polarity has me second guessing. Sure, you can flip the cable but then you look dumb. *sigh* I may get the Tangzu x HBB Hey Dry Edition instead.

Can see that it’s the same shell shape as the zeros. Big fan of the at the zeros sounded, just didn’t fit me properly, but that’s my own ears. Only IEM I’ve been able to comfortably use is the IE300
