You basically summed it up at the end. You have different taste and are likely accustomed to a different sound. The Sundaras are essentially the opposite from the 1-3kz region, with a notable dip/darkness to the mids.

Acclimation is huge for tunings like this. I have tried and enjoyed all kinds of tunings over the years, but in recent years, I greatly enjoy present mids, and have to EQ all Hifimans to truely enjoy them. I also have never found the mid hump of the clears or Elex to be that significant from a tuning perspective, but the combination of dynamic range and macro dynamics made the mids/vocals sort of attack you, making them feel more forward than they technically are.

When you buy new headphones your brain is always used to the old ones and it always takes a week or so to adjust.Usually we always find a headphones tonality weird at first, even if its a super neutral one like the 560s.

And coming from the really bassy xm4s, that could be a weird process.

I would advise you against returning the hd560s... give them a couple of weeks of frequent listening to get to you.

I can actually tell you that the hd 560s have really linear bass and are the pair of headphones I own that have the most sub bass (disregarding iems). You will probably end up liking their bass and their overall superior linear fr and technicalities if you give them a chance.

And if you never get used tho their bass, then 70% of all audiophile headphones just got off your potential buy list....

Yes I remember my Sundaras also gave me jaw pressure. Not sure why they did and my future 6XX and Arya's don't since they have egg shaped earpads that come lower, or why my Emu Teaks don't with their circular pads. Weird to hear other people having the same thing. Wonder if a headband replacement would resolve it.

Not at all. Might just be me, but I previously had a HarmonicDyne Zeus used on the L30 - and it was so annoying! It terminated in 4.4, and you had to use an adapter to 3.5mm, then an adapter to quarter inch. It was one giant dong. Now both my HD600 and Salnotes Zero terminate in 3.5, and I just simply don't find anything wrong when plugging it in.

You have what we call golden ears 😂 I have HD800s myself and a decent amp and honestly I still can't tell a difference. Both 320 kbps and Lossless sound fantastic to me. I archive lossless on my laptop and harddrives and convert to 320 on music player. If I could hear a major difference I'd probably add lossless to my player, but alas I don't have golden ears.

The 1770s have something like 5 dB less treble than the 1990s, normalized to 1000 Hz. They're either missing treble (except the peak) or have too much mids depending on where you normalize.

In my experience the 1770s are duller sounding than the 1990s without EQ, but the 1990s can also be actively unpleasant on treble-hot content.
