The idea is to incentivize trained scientists through grants while discouraging amateurs and treasure hunters. In most cases the latter can do more damage than good. See Egypt as a case study

It was left at Reading Station while he was changing trains. So he rewrote it from memory, having burned all of his notes. But it was a mess. So he rewrote it again. And then he did a proof-printing, and then substantially revised it. And then he put out a limited edition version that people could actually get, but that put him deep in debt. So he cut out half of that version for the version that went out to the public.
It was not a smooth process by any means, and it means that there is no definitive version of the text, even among the works that weren't lost.

And they added onto it. That's all. That's it. Chill.

Wikipedia says that princely states occupied 40% of the area and 23% of the population. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princely_state
British India was on average better than an average princely state. But there were few states like Travancore which performed better than British India. Tirthankar Roy has a really good book on it.

Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t the yellow areas in this map not even 2/3 of the subcontinent?
To my understanding the British Raj was much poorer and less productive per capita than the relatively autonomous princely states

Yes I read the title like 5 times before I figured out that the ancient civilization didn't have lidar tdchnology.

The algorithms can determine differences in height returns from the thousands of readings and determine the difference between ground and canopy.
Most returns may find canopy in this scenario, but when there are sporadic but consistent drops in heights it can determine if it is an outlier/error or part of the ground etc.

You are right, most of the measurements correspond to the forest canopy. However, the latest lidar sensors use very high frequencies and shifting angles, so some laser beams do get to the ground. The resulting point clouds are then classified by applying different algorithms (High vegetation, low vegetation, ground, etc.) and you can apply filters to create a surface from assumed ground points only. It's not perfect, but still very very good.

I was going to say the book felt like very critical of the UK, but in the "official" way where you can't call out or openly criticize your superiors.

Yeah I’ve heard of waste management as a common industry for mafias to control. I think it’s because it’s so territorial and there’s really only room for one vendor in a given area (who goes shopping for their trash guy?), so being able to use force to crowd out competition determines whether you’ll capture market share.
I’ve also seen firsthand some of these dynamics in informal settlements in Kenya where the government can’t provide waste management due to lack of infrastructure. Though in that case it’s usually more “youth groups/gangs” fighting over garbage collection turf than organized criminal enterprises.

Wasn’t one of his motives for accelerating operations during the Arab revolt was so they’d (the Arabs) have a better negotiating position post war?

All of the India wasn’t ruled by Britain but they controlled two thirds by area and more by population.

Everything will always suck for almost everyone almost all the time relative to the experience of the ruling class, it's just a question of to what degree. A system (or lack thereof) like anarcho capitalism just sets a very, very, very, exceptionally low floor for the everyman's quality of life.
