Diocletian. His reforms after the Crisis of the Third Century did away entirely with the pretense of Republicanism.

Yeah, how weird was it then to have a 50 year-old coin? Seems commonplace nowadays to come across a quarter from the 70s at times for example.

For an "instant" generation that wants EVERYTHING and wants it NOW, you're right, this will not make an impact. Fortunately, there are still people who think in long term around.

Who was the first Roman Emperor to openly accept the position and project his authority in title, etc. and do away w the pretext of Roman Republicanism?

The tldr is they are using old whaling logs to help understand middle of the ocean weather/climate patterns from around 200 years ago. Creating a larger scale picture of how the climate and weather are changing over time.

That’s so sad. The Axis powers were monsters, but the allies weren’t perfect either (Japanese interment by Roosevelt, Soviet gulags, the atomic bombings of Japan).

600 years ago was well past the Viking and Vinland times.

Don’t we have any form of sonar or other sound based scanners that can reach depth under ground? Don’t we map the sea floor using that technology, why can’t we do this for places like Egypt where we know there’ll be hundreds of hidden tombs and chambers?

Between these records and the British naval records I would think they might come up with a decent 19th century baseline.

From the article:
>The excavation revealed a huge religious center with three sanctuaries, a sacred lake, more than 1,500 objects, busts, statues, golden pieces, a huge collection of coins portraying Alexander the Great, Queen Cleopatra and the Ptolemies…

How long did these coins typically stay in circulation?
Is it likely this is evidence of some level of trade network that existed from northern Europe to the indigenous people in Greenland? And from there to Newfoundland?
Or is it more likely this arrived at some point after 1497?
