how old is old?
I have a second generation iPad Air running iOS 12.3.something and still find it stupendously capable as a writing machine.
regarding the AirPods Pro, my opinion is not necessarily authoritative and is definitely not informed by first hand experience, but your money is almost certainly better spent elsewhere regardless of what you're looking for from over-the-ears.

i dont know exactly which ipad model it is, but parts of the screen dont work and i also just like to have it instead of the mac so to watch movies have all my school stuff there and for it to be small enough to take it with me everywhere too
yea the airpods seem a bit like a waste of money to me since i have mine and they funcion well enough and maybe a deep cleanign service would make thw sound clearer too

Go for it. iPad is great for school. You still have your old AirPods so you lose nothing. If you need more isolation try these https://www.complyfoam.com/products/softconnect-by-comply

The question lies with what would make you more productive. Would you use the iPad for work/education/socials/games? I’d definitely go with the iPad. AirPods are a fraction of the price and you can buy some incredible overhead sound canceling headphones for like $60 whilst you save up for your AirPods. I used to love AirPods but since doing long journey international flights, the headphones are another level. Plus it’s harder to loose them.
Have a look at these, we purchased these for our travel and they’re awesome for the price.
