Actually, yes it can, as Apple makes clear the first time you power off a new phone or one that has been reset. If, however, someone can access airplane mode from the lock screen (de facto default), that will turn off all tracking. Since stolen phones are often going to a glorified chop shop, there is no guarantee it will never show up in any tracking again. That is unless the Find My bug pops up and the device starts showing up as phantom pings.

Sadly cracked glass on the back of any iPhone (with the exception of non-pro 14s) need either a rear system replacement or full unit replacement to be fixed and those aren’t cheap…

That’s why me personally, I only go for the OtterBox defender series. I’ve never had an issue with any of those. Yes they’re a bit more bulkier but at the same time I don’t have to worry about any accidental cracks.

Iv been using the aluminium and rubber framed Gorilla case since I cracked my iPhone 5 screen. fallen in toilets, puddles and ponds with no damage. Not the prettiest way of displaying your phone but it’s more about function over form
