From experience working Apple retail, elderly people generally do not like to be surprised with new technology/different technology as they tend to struggle with what they already have and do not want to adapt to something new.

I’d say you’re better of talking with her and telling her that you would like to do this for her, and let her be part of the decision.

If just picking between the three iPhones, I’d say 12 Pro, unless your mom’s current phone has a home button, then I’d go with the SE.

I believe you’re much more likely to scratch the screen(or back glass even) than the camera. The lenses are still (to my knowledge) sapphire crystal (ever since the 6 I believe?) so while it’s not impossible it would take placing it on like rough concrete for it to be truly affected imo.

No. Not all models are findable when off, and since you didn’t tell us what kind you have…

Plus if it is powered down, of course it isn’t going to make noises when you try to make it play them. It’s off!

Try this: I’m assuming the phone was taken away because of something you did. Accept the punishment and don’t do more things (like taking back said phone without permission) that might bring more crap upon yourself.

The XS Max is kinda old this point. They've caught my eye too, but it would be a downgrade from my SE in terms of processor.

The phone has an easier time processing the 12 MP version because it can combine the information of a four pixel square into one single pixel. But even then these tiny pixels can't gather enough photons to produce a clear image.

Something fancy like Night Mode would have helped here. Longer exposure means more light means lower ISO (sensor sensitivity) means less noise.

The iPhone will apply image processing (including noise reduction and its "Smart HDR" and "Deep Fusion" stuff) to the pure sensor data: About Apple ProRAW – obviously to a lesser extent and not as aggressively as for JPEGs.

But in edge cases like yours it's still a mess. That's why the middle of the speaker mesh is still visible. There was despite all the noise enough information to be worth keeping, while on the sides the mesh structure got so small that it was overwhelmed by noise and therefore reduced to… blobs.

Somewhere in this process the phone somehow does something that results in grid-like structures.

It's physics, followed by engineering. All we can do is to understand the principles and act accordingly. And maybe consider the Pro in ProRAW to mean "Processed" instead of "Professional" :D
