The Mosquito Control Board of Hudson County was started by the early 20th century. Jersey City Medical Center did research on yellow fever. The Board continues to trap and record mosquitos continually, sending samples to Trenton and census numbers. We are surrounded by wet land. In the 19th century we were known for celery, a luxury of the rich that, even today, is grown in mucky soil.
The hospital of chronic cases ( many having encephalitis) was run by the County.
When West Nile virus was first discovered, Hudson County had far fewer cases than New York City, or Long Island because the Mosquito Control Board had continued to track and trap.
Does anyone know what park this photo was taken at? Apparently it’s somewhere around here and has a hilltop that overlooks the industrial landscape as well as Newark airport?
