I bet you’ve seen a lot of change, I’ve been here since 2004 and never imagined to see what it’s become. Back then I was young and naive and wished it was “more fun like hoboken” and now I’m middle aged and want quiet and wondering why it’s so damn loud all the time…like hoboken.

I moved here in 1988, downtown was not very safe then. I lived on Christopher Columbus Dr just off Jersey, on the same block as the bagel store (which opened a few years later), and for a while the building next door was a crack den (right on CC Dr!).

Don't start looking before the month you're planning to move. The fact is it's a PITA to show an occupied apartment. It's done, I've done it, but it's a pain. Besides which most apartments need a bit of work between tenants, even if it's just a bit of scrubbing and touch up paint. So in reality there's a month for the landlord to rent the apartment between leases.
But a landlord who doesn't want to risk losing another month's rent is going to want a lease in hand by the second to third week of the month. And there is the game. A brief period of musical chairs with tenants and landlords trying to match.
No fun for either side but that's the way it is. When I'm listing an apartment and somebody asks me if they could move in the next month or the one after, I have to laugh. Why would I choose to lose a month or two rent unless they were the only applicant on Earth? I'm better off dropping the rent $100 to generate more leads than losing that month's rent.

My dad was born and raised in jersey city and never left. I remember his favorite driving game was "That Place Used To Be a Bar". The changes were both a surprise and a reminder to just how much the neighborhoods he lived in had changed.

I'd say mid-June to July the earliest. Why do you want to start now? It seems so early.

So glad we don't do that anymore.

Anyone know if the cats who hang out in the community garden on Brunswick will be okay? Do they have somewhere warm to go?

For PATH, it’s best to keep an eye on their Twitter account.
If ice does turn out to be an issue, you won’t find out until they start cancelling trains. They’re not going to give people much advance notice because the conditions are too unpredictable.
For what it’s worth, PATH seems to be pretty reliable during winter storms except when there’s heavy snowfall and snow drifts impacting the outdoor tracks. Even then, they are usually back to normal within a few hours.

It could be a million different things. E.g., do you have your own business? Need advice for saving for college and retirement in a tax efficient manner? Any tricky investment-related stuff to deal with? Those are the type of things people tend to want to talk to a professional about. For the more complicated stuff, you don’t want to go to a random person at a place like H&R Block or whatever.
On the flip side, if your personal situation is fairly simple and you only have W-2 income plus maybe some interest and dividend income, then practically any tax preparer should be competent enough to handle that.

I don’t think any original residents were around in 1979. I think that would be more like 1579.

You cannot look any earlier than 60 days, that's the general in-advance posting maximum for apartment listings in Jersey. You can start looking in June at the earliest for an August move-in. You can look in May to get an idea but nothing will be available for August that early. Since its a summer move-in its gonna be expensive and units disappear in hours. I don't know if any month is "cheaper" but probably looking in August is slightly better than in June.

One of the people quoted, Israel Aponte, is said to own an exotic fish store. That's the pet shop that was on the corner of Newark and Jersey where the Pet Shop bar now is.
Also, Railroad Ave is now Colombis Ave.

one thing I always tell people is that there was so little here at that point, that if it was a holiday and you needed food, literally your only alternative was to take the PATH into Manhattan, as all of the few places to get food in Downtown JC were closed.
also I watched the second WTC tower come down that day, from Christopher Columbus Dr. I will never ever forget the collective gasp from the people filling the street around me, crazy.
I was even here for the earlier WTC bombing in 93, I was working nights in the city then and couldn't get to work because (of course) the PATH had shut down.
