I was just having the exact same thought, it’s January and it’s raining almost every other day. Everyone at work and around me are so worried about the snow coming in, talking about possible school closure or delays… I’m over here just praying for some good snow that stays on the ground.

We had the worst drought in 20 years this summer. I'd rather it rain now when we're all indoors anyway.

You mentioned meteorology, it might interest you to know that this year is a La Nina.

From NOAA.gov: Typically, when La Niña is present, slightly above average temperatures occur across the northeastern United States.

Location of the jet stream: If the jet stream sets up over the coast or further west over the Appalachians, warmer air will be infiltrated off the Atlantic and over the coastal plain. If the jet stream is further east, it would allow for colder air to advance further south and east.

Timing: This is especially key with winter storms and forecasts. If you’re a snow lover, you would want cold air arriving and in place during and a day or two before a storm system arrives or passes by. A fresh injection of cold air, that may only last a couple days, paired with a nearby storm system would be enough for snowfall.

Just try to appreciate that there are currently no active drought conditions in MA and that it isn't -20 like it has been in many previous years.

Precipitation in the winter is normal. Since the temps are above freezing (and higher than normal), it’s coming down as rain instead of snow.

We’re transitioning to El Niño in mid-February if I recall.

As a snow plow driver for over 20 years, I've been stuck in these precipitation patterns plenty of times. There is nothing new about it really..... There have been PLENTY of years where it snowed what seemed like every other day for a month straight. Sometimes a couple inches, sometimes a couple feet. January is always a very grey, dark month. Only difference right now is that the precip weather pattern is landing on us while it's not very cold. Which again isn't really anything new. Our average high temp is about 36 degrees (no snow)

Averages in January mean very little though, the huge swings of being single digit temps one week to being what it is today the next can really screw around with our averages

Snow

I mean that’s great if you spend all your free time indoors shopping, eating, playing video games, going to a stinky, crowded gym, whatever. But winter with without snow is the worst for anyone who likes fresh air and outdoor activities, and knows that snow is friggin FUN. The only reason people in places like Scandinavia are so happy throughout the winter is because… snow is friggin FUN. And when the temps are colder you usually have more blue sky days. The gray, rainy crap we are now experiencing is torturous.

And don’t forget the ecosystem that depends on a snow pack insulating the ground all winter and then SLOWLY melting away in the Spring. And then there’s the water resources, including aquifers, that depend on snow pack gradually melting, unlike rain which can just drain off into streams and rivers and head to the ocean.

And snow is friggin FUN.

Eh. I live near the water and there’s plenty to do outdoors in winter without snow. And for people like me that have intolerance to extreme cold, it’s a relief to have a mild winter.

I agree. When I was born CO2 was at 316 parts per million. It's now at 420 parts per million. The small aberrations that we notice, cooler or hotter, don't mean that much compared to the huge cluster fuck we are perpetrating.

Why can’t it snow instead

I think snowpack is better to prevent drought than rain though. It’s good to have snow melting throughout the spring, instead of just dumping rain for a few months and then going back to being dry. I could be wrong though, I’m trying to reach far back in my memory to high school science class.
