I just filled out most of my returns on TurboTax. I specifically had to search their help section for "1099-G" which is the form that we got for the 2021 tax year MA refund (but that was received in 2022, so part of 2022 taxable income).
When I entered the amount from the 1099-G, my federal tax return amount went down, so it seems like the MA tax refund was in fact taxable income at the federal level. Note, like others have said, I do the itemized deduction.

If you itemized and were under the SALT limit of 10k, or if you were over it by less than the refund, you will owe taxes on it. Possible, but unlikely. Most people that itemize in the new system are WAY over the salt limit.

Word is that Haverhill made a similar payment, so Mayor Galvin demanded it from the woburn teachers union since there was precedent. Not sure how common it is.
The PTOs from the schools made fun of it by having a bake sale today with a $250,000 goal.

I almost always get site 95. It is by far the best it's in a little tiny ravine/bottom of a small hill right on the pond. None of the other sites can even see you.

Yea I thought that was bull shit too. As a tax payer I’m happy to pay for police detail so teachers can strike as long as they need to until they’re getting properly treated. Also I don’t get how the strike can be illegal.

From OP:
>So basically I run it out of my apartment at this point. It’s nothing formal yet but I had a lot of bulk mtg cards that I wanted to give away so I have out little packs to an LGS in my area for kids who wanted to play commander and couldn’t afford decks. Then I made a post on an lgbt facebook group I’m in offering some up to people and groups in my area that lead me to giving some to 3 school programs, a library group, a veterans group that I’ve worked with multiple times and a bunch of local families during the holidays. I’ve gotten donations from all over western Mass so far as well as a generous amount from Battleground games in Norton. I started a Facebook group for it a couple months ago but have yet to post anything substantial, as I was looking for a job but now that I’m settled and have more free time, I’m gonna post more regularly and commit myself more fully to using it.

No, because these were taxes you already overpaid. It wouldn’t make sense to tax your taxes.

Reach out to the BSA Western Massachusetts Council. They have a similar program that is, no offense, a bit more mature. They've been sourcing cards for a long, long time.
