Shouldn't it also be chopped? At least a bit? I can't see much flavor coming out of an only-peeled chunk. To me that's like just throwing an egg into a dish still in its shell and expecting it to taste eggier.

In the 40s they also made a car out of materials made from soybeans and wheat. Called the Soybean Car, and you'd never guess why.
