Trust me, this isn't just a "MPA (MPAA) sucks" rant. It's something I've been spitballing and figured it could make for a decent discussion. So, as most here know, PG-13 was originally created to stand in the gap of what became an increasingly expanding threshold between PG and R-rated films. Since then and especially in modern times, it's morphed into the default rating for four-quadrant movies and relegated PG films to mostly children's entertainment. Due to PG-13's widely encompassing nature, does anybody else feel like it has just as much as a gulf now as there was between PG and R back in the day?
For example, The Woman King and Bumblebee are both PG-13, despite one containing several stabbings, decapitated heads, near full-frontal nudity and a decent amount of blood, while the other has very mild profanity and violence that's almost exclusively robot-on-robot. If I had young kids, I probably would have taken them to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife or the latest Dragon Ball Super movie...I probably wouldn't have taken them to see The Batman. And yet, all these films share the same rating. I'm not saying this to be prude because I enjoyed every project I just mentioned and don't feel any of the ratings are wrong, I just think it's interesting how wide the spectrum is.
