I was watching Hobbs and Shaw earlier (I know, it’s a ridiculous movie), and the intro scene has a female MI6 agent (played by Vanessa Kirby) easily overpowering multiple trained male agents with blows and acrobatic kicks.
I have nothing against Kirby, but she looks more like a fashion model than someone who could believably pull something like that off. And I also realize Hobbs and Shaw isn’t exactly going for realism.
But it got me thinking how often Hollywood puts overly-muscled men into action roles, yet casts women who look like a stiff breeze would knock them over. Other examples like Gal Gadot, who is like a rail is supposed to be an Amazon, come to mind…or Scarlett Johansson, who is supposed to be an elite hand to hand combatant in the Marvel universe.
I’m not saying Hollywood needs to pump women full of tren like they do with men, but I’d like to see women cast who would be a bit more believable in highly physical roles. Look how badass Linda Hamilton was in T2. People still talk about that today.
Edit: I didn’t realize this would be such a…controversial opinion?
Edit 2: I understand why Hollywood casts the actors they do. That’s been stated here already a dozen times. I’d just like to see more physically-realistic casting…I’m not looking for explanations for why it happens. If my opinion bothers you or you don’t agree, feel free to move on.
Edit 3: This has been an interesting experience and reminds me why I don’t like posting on Reddit. Some of you can’t just read a question/opinion and respond respectfully and clearly need to be an asshole or weirdly argumentative about this. I can’t imagine why as many people here would have such strong opinions on strong-looking women. Some of you honestly seem insufferable and difficult just for the sake of being difficult.
