Ana de Armas in Blade Runner and the key role in Knives Out (one of this decades best films)… then we have Pedro Pascal in…. EVERYTHING… but namely, The Mandolorian (as The Mandalorian) and him as Joel in The Last of Us. They even got Diego Luna to play his brother. I was born in ‘92. I’m Puerto Rican. Best we had, was Benny Blanco from the Bronx and ofc, Luis Guzman. I feel like Hispanic actors that aren’t typecasts are JUST NOW, in 2022, JUST starting to get the recognition they deserve. Even in Knives Out, it was a running joke that Ana de Armas character had a different ethnicity everytime someone spoke about her. And I think that was very intentional and well put in the movie, courtesy of Rain Johnson. Because American audiences see: “that Mexican character” or that “Hispanic character” which no depth or distinction towards their heritage. Hollywood brushing that off was beautifully painted in Knives Out when each family member speaking on Arma’s character, said a different ethnicity every time. Rain Johnson blatantly said “she’s Hispanic… and y’all can’t tell the difference” with his movie and he wasn’t wrong. Thoughts?
