Serious question, has a movie ever failed because another film was released close to or the exact same day as the other movie?

Edit: I have more than enough evidence to know this is a common occurrence.

So a big topic in the sonic community right now is the idea that sonic 3 will fail because more people will want to see Avatar 3 since they both release on the same day. Listen, I would guarantee that every sonic fan under a roof would watch the film day 1.

Now I don't know where this train of thoughts came from, perhaps one underrated movie famously under performed because of a more popular film. Now I'm not asking a cheap question "what film famously under performed because of another movie" question. I'm more so looking for the statistics of when certain films release on what day, and if there is a film that best describes this I'd like to hear it.

I know films under perform for a number of reasons but I'm mostly seeing if my point is right and sonic wont immediately fail because of avatar.
