Caught ‘The Three Amigos’ on TV last night, and there is definitely a lot of inspiration for ‘Tropic Thunder’ in ‘The Three Amigos’. The Three Amigos are the star of a big television program in the US. They’re drawn to Mexico to take care of the threat of El Guapo, but the whole time they think they are shooting an episode of their TV series. They even find wives and get married… for the show. It’s only when El Guapo fires at them with live ammunition that they realize the situation they are in is real, and not staged television. Now that plot certainly sounds familiar! I thoroughly enjoyed the film regardless of it being a bit dated, and now I’m going to have to rewatch ‘Tropic Thunder’ with this film in the back of my head. What do you all think of these two movies?
EDIT: I understand the details of the plot aren’t perfect in my post, my stoned brain clearly didn’t remember it perfectly lol. Also, there are a lot of comments about Seven Samurai, Bug’s Life, and Galaxy Quest. I agree that they all share similar tropes - Tropic Thunder was just the first one that came to my mind while watching Three Amigos. I appreciate the insight from everybody!
