Reply to If your favorite movie is not a "universially adored movie" (i.e. Forrest Gump, Titanic) or "classic" (Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind) why is it your favorite movie? by [deleted]
Wayne's World is my all time favourite movie. I used to watch it every day when I got home from school. It's such a random nothing movie with zero stakes and I love it. Weird finding out, years later, that Dana Carvey and Mike Meyers aren't actually BFFs
Second favourite movie of all time is Seven Psychopaths.

Reply to What are some great examples of horror movies hiding things in the background? by chazinabox
Three Men and a Baby famously has an accidental version of this; a cardboard cutout in the background that some people think is a ghost.
The video game Until Dawn has figures in the background in certain cutscenes.
I think Lake Mungo and The Witch in the Window have moments like this too?

Reply to war/history movies by Consistent-Exam-1627
“The Alamo” (2004) is great. I haven’t watched it since Texas History in 7th grade, but I love that movie. It’s not 100% accurate of course, but most major events and even some of the minor fun details really happened
Black Hawk Down is also my all-time favorite war movie. Saving Private Ryan is second.

Yeah, kinda sad to see the sub dismiss this essay off a kneejerk reaction to the title and a single point in the first paragraphs.
It is, without doubt, one of the best critical examinations that I’ve read on this sub in a long time. The author clearly knows the Irish literary tradition very well and it’s fascinating to read about how McDonagh’s works fit into that history.

MAMA (also directed by Andy Muschetti) does this too.

That’s only a very small part of this essay, which is very well written and covers quite a lot, incorporating a lot of Irish history and literary tradition.
It really shouldn’t be dismissed merely as someone calling out McDonagh for being raised in London.

Calvary is from the other McDonagh, Michael.

It's almost like that's entirely irrelevant to the discussion of whether someone should be compensated for their work.

DMB is great. People who make DMB part of their identity suck.

As someone who used to revere Seinfeld I can't handle him much anymore. He's so smug and just doesn't seem curious. Like his past success leaves him with nothing new to discover about anything.

The exorcism of Emily rose. It's courtroom drama spliced with a horror movie.

Ya I can’t find anything. Would be interested to be proved wrong but the only info I can find is obvious stuff like cable tv editing scenes and cutting out profanity like they do for any movie on public Tv in America lmfao (why air it at all)
I can’t find any info at all about songs being changed etc, unless you live in the United Arab Emirates where they apparently released a version that was completely recut in chronological order

Jump scares are meant to be used sporadically. Overloading a movie with them is lazy and thoughtless. And you’re right, the story isn’t really original. But using a smile to mask pain is far from a unique or new concept. It’s been used in entertainment since before anyone can remember. You’ve heard of the “Sad Clown” I assume”. That’s been used in some of the oldest movies produced, and on stage before that. If you want a modern day “sad clown”, check out Puddles Pity Party. His live shows are fantastic and fun if you ever get a chance.

It's not, I'll give you that. I was actually complimenting her, though. It takes a good actor to play the part as it's needed. She's a film student making a documentary. Her being a polished actor wouldn't lend to the credibility the movie was trying to create.
