agreed. i rewatched this in late 2022 just to refresh my mind on why it was so disappointing, i still love the trailer to this day, but it really took the generic route by the halfway mark. i do love the alien designs still.

hancock (2008). first 2/3rds was so great and one of the more interesting takes on superheroes (as well as the movie being funny) then the last act completely tanks the movie into forgettable territory. i still defend this movie here and there but it really could have been greater.

This is a part of a marketing hype that was convinced that Gen X was going to be a hippy rebirth. There were other movies and tv shows at this time like Rude Awakening with Eric Roberts.
Kids from communes did start coming out to the real world at this time. They always had weed, so they were welcomed for that, but some were messed up and resembled stereotypical hillbillies.

Tell me more. I've seen it on a few recommendation lists but don't know anything besides it having Winona (sp?) .

This is by far the movie I’ve seen the most when I was at school.

The Golden Compass was recently remade into a TV series that was quite successful so think licensing might be a issue there. I don't know who owns the option for John Carter. The issue comes to the licensing. Not anyone can just remake a book adaption. Studios and production companies basically rent a licensing agreement and it is up to them whether they use it. Sometimes they can be locked away for years till they expire and either someone else buys it or they renew it and lock it away again or use it. It comes down to whether they prioritise making it or not. I suppose if a director comes to the owner of the agreement with a really could pitch perhaps they would let them make it.

Very intense. Do you have any less extreme examples? I'm not looking for a Ms45 or anything that makes me uncomfortable.

The existence of Pearl doesn’t even make sense to me. A backstory for a character that wasn’t interesting enough to give a shit about in the first place.

Dredd 2012 remade Judge Dredd (which was considered to be a box office flop)
