If you have a chance to watch What's Eating Gilbert Grape, that might change your mind. He was 18 years old at the time of filming and he gave one of the most convincing portrayals of an individual with an intellectual disability that I've ever seen. That is, in my opinion, the best example of how convincing his acting could truly be and is vastly different than anything you've seen him in within the last 20 years.

I don’t disagree with your premise that Leo can be hit or miss as an actor. But your examples are very much confusing me.

You must have watched a different version of Once Upon a Time if your takeaway was Timothy Olyphant > Leo. First of all, he’s in 2 scenes. Second of all, Leo gave a fantastic performance.

And I thought that his performance in Departed is the best in the film, and one of the greatest he’s ever given.

But he’s had had share of duds. And I don’t think, at least from an acting standpoint, that he’s reached the potential that was there in Gilbert Grape. And there’s an argument to be made that a contemporary like Joaquin Phoenix has had a much more interesting career.

He’s not my cup of tea, mostly because I can feel the effort behind his acting, which really turns me off. Its a difficult thing to point out to people, but you can certainly feel it. And until recently, he had very little sense of humor about any of his roles. Most were very self serious.

He’s got talent, sure. But most of the time when I see he’s in a movie I’m probably going to skip it.

I think he's overrated, but not one of the worst actors. In all the films I've seen with him (Inception, Catch Me if You Can, The Great Gatsby, a little bit of Titanic) he's always playing a sort of capricious eccentric, so I think he relies on the same persona, in a way.

There was that moment in Inception, however, where he's supposed to be witnessing something that should be absolutely heartbreaking for his character, and he comes across as more annoyed than anything else. That took me out of the movie.

I love Leo’s films , he has managed to consistently work hard and has an incredible list of films without any serious dips , his work for the environment is commendable

However I feel he favours the screaming and shouting acting too much , he does it a lot across pretty much every film and it comes across as too performing rather than subtle acting

I find it hard to find one where he hasn’t at one point resorted to an outrage , fury , screaming or yelling scene where it might not always be necessary
