Basketball Diaries, This Boys Life, Catch Me If You Can, The Departed, Django, The Great Gatsby, The Beach, Gangs of New York. Actually, the only movie where I thought he wasn't THAT great was the one he won an award for in The Revenant. It was a good movie, but he was mainly grunting and screaming throughout it.

I like his acting and his movies but his range is limited. I wouldn't go as far as to say he's like Ryan Reynolds who just keeps on playing a smarmy van wilder. But Leo's angry intense look is the same in every movie. He goes to 11 but sounds the same. Whereas I submit that Daniel day Lewis has true range. He really disappears into the role. My left foot is not Mohican is not gangs of NY and there shall be blood. Meryl streep has range.

Hard disagree on The Inception thing. Tho I dont particularly think Leo's acting was at his best there, Damon kinda was lost in the mix as well. Nicholson outshone both.

Reagrdless of that, I dont personally think he is overrated. Perfomance-wise he is more often than not the standout in the films he features.

You mentioned movies where he wasn’t specifically lauded or nominated. Now do it again with that criteria in place…

Just about the only thing about him that isn’t believable is “toughness” if that makes sense. Revenant was an outlier and more about surviving but in Departed I didn’t think he was tough (perhaps his character wasn’t meant to be) the way Damon was or even Sheen. And in Gangs of New York he didn’t sell me on it either. And in Great Gatsby when he loses it on Tom Buchanan it came across as bratty instead of aggressive or tough.

Leo just doesn’t come across as a guy who’s ever thrown a punch. Which doesn’t mean he isn’t a great actor, just that it makes a few roles feel less genuine.

He definitely puts in the work and choose excellent projects. I know I'm getting at least quality and effort when Leo's attached.

I also think he has fantastic focus and commitment as an actor. He "acts without ego", if that makes sense. Hes happy to play characters who are flawed, naked, vulnerable, slovenly, creepy, or gross. And hes very good at using his own handsomeness to enhance all of that.

His main defect is his voice, I think. Hes very good at accents but he can't always shake that essential boyish quality to his voice. I liked him in Revenent but I couldn't shake how it was Leo's unchanging Romeo voice invoking all these mountain oaths at me.

I like him. I like the work he does. I think he'll always be somewhat on the "movie star" side of things rather than the pure "actor" category, but hes one of the best at it. Like Cary Grant or Robert Redford, perhaps not a chameleon but a fantastic and magnetic lead.
