Me too, but the multiple fatalities on the Whites heading into the season paired with the surge of homeless led us to this point.....

I’m embarrassed that we have to talk about cold weather in New Hampshire! What is the world coming to?

Thank you for your advice. I was just annoyed looking at the OEM MSRP price for the part being $245 when I could get a high quality part for much less.

Ever wonder why daycare is so expensive? Used to be that you could find someone in the neighborhood that would watch kids for pretty reasonable rates. Then regulation started and those slowly went away. Now they're all super fancy and super expensive.

Well I wasn’t going to go hiking this weekend but this might be my only chance to visit the stratosphere so now I have to reconsider…

I suspect that happens! They (WMUR) waited until the NWS highlighted that, even though this scenario was clearly in play to any sensible meteorologist multiple days in advance. This mechanism is called a tropopause fold and part of the reason why the winds are expected to accelerate so much atop Washington (see the Bernoulli Principle).

WMUR was saying the windchill on Mt. Washington could be -100F and that the troposphere might actually dip below the observatory, putting it briefly in the stratosphere.

Ann Stokes loop trail is nice little walk in the woods with nice viewpoints. As always crampons/polls etc.
It is a dirt road so the drive there in the winter can be a little rough if you have just fwd

Do more than check your pressures, check your sidewalls! If you have any severe dry rot or chunks of rubber taken out with interior chords showing, buy some new tires! Trust me you do not want to be stranded on a flat or blowout in the middle of a storm or snap freeze either.
Not to mention tire treads it's very easy to misinterpret how much stopping power, traction and control you have especially if you aren't well educated on cars. A lot of tires will start underperforming in wet and icy conditions even with 4/32 of tread left. A lot of tire places will charge you little to nothing to get a tire evaluation.

Had a young porcupine absolutely destroy two hemlocks by my house last winter. At first we thought it was cute. Then the boughs began to fall. Then huge piles of boughs and bare trees. The trees survived but with a lot of damage and bare spots.

We keep them on leash when outside; they're both too dumb to stay away from the road. Every once in awhile one of them will dash out when someone opens the door and go romping through the woods for a half hour.

Very nice! The first time I visited there, I actually wandered in from the Pisgah State Park side, over Bear and Daniels mountain. Didn't even realize there were connector trails all the way through until I came down and saw one of the signs. Never got to see the stairs intact like that unfortunately - they were already partially collapsed.

Very good point, thank you. The woods are pretty dense there too.

I was there in October. Cool place with an interesting story.
Preplan any hiking, as the trails aren’t very well marked. Maybe take a picture of the map located at the parking lot.

Same. Second floor apartment, natural gas heat with a single register in the largest room.
First floor unit keeps our pipes from freezing.
Gotta kinda layer up to take a poop though, so that’s a small downside.

It's on a trail system that is a pretty easy hike with a couple great views. Make sure you continue the hike to the "Moon Ledge View" it's an amazing view. I believe you can see 3 states from it, Mass, NH and Vermont.

That’s a pretty cool site. I looked it up and it’s not a super long drive from my house. Definitely gonna put that on the list for spring adventures.

Sure are. I have a theory that car dealerships don't want more folks to start buying their own air pumps. Because....profit.
