Head up route 17 to Ringwood & West Milford, then drive through West Milford to Route 23 into Jefferson and through Morris County. You get a nice look of nature and then into some more developed areas.

In Newark, on Magazine St is/was a rooming house that a few years ago had several airline employees with rooms. Each room had its own bathroom, microwave, small fridge, split unit heat/ac. I would compare it to a hotel room. Very clean, at least 5 years ago. You would have to call rooming and boarding at the Department of Community Affairs in Trenton for the address. I believe it is in the Ironbound section. Not sure how far transit is.

Chester (Morris County) is nice. You could also pass through Madison and Morristown, on your way there.

If you're willing to drive out to Hunterdon County, you could hit Clinton, Frenchtown, Lambertville, and maybe even hop over to New Hope, PA.

When I was a kid in the early 80s the ONLY people called autistic were the incredibly small minority with Savant Syndrome ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savant_syndrome ). This changed over time (to be clear: for the good) to the modern spectrum diagnosis. But I really don't think there's an easy way to control for this change in a study, and it always feels kind of reckless when researchers do. You throw something like this out there and people start panicking about vaccines or drinking water or whatever for no reason.
