That’s a big "it depends". In some towns there are so many condos/apt. buildings going up that the locals who are the backbone staff for many local businesses are being forced out of town as they can no longer afford a place in town due to the rising rents.

These same apartment buildings get huge tax breaks and incentives which can’t make up for the undue stress the extra population puts onto the municipal services, and educational services of the town. So… raise taxes on everybody in town.

Back to affordability, those apartment rental rates I mentioned; I can think of one building Where the rates were reasonable, say $1,500 or below for a one bedroom, the new building is $4,000 and above. I was in a local the other day and happened to strike up a conversation with the guy next to me, turns out he had just moved into one of these new buildings, he was the type of guy who almost immediately finds a way to let you know just who he is and what he does… turns out he’s shelling out $6K a month for a two bedroom, enjoy that buddy.

Meanwhile the people who used to be able to live in the previous building had to move, can’t find another place in town they can afford so they end up moving out of town and have to shell out transportation fees to get to work because they can’t afford to buy a car which they never needed nor wanted before.

they are big, ugly, new buildings which don’t fit into the landscape and stick out like sore thumbs.

But… that’s the story, it happens again and again, it happens here and there, it’s been going on for years, while it slowed for awhile, it’s picking up speed again.

Yes.

You can easily amuse teens for a few hours in AC. There are arcades, rides, a boardwalk, candy stores…. Showboat has indoor activities for kids/teens. Sugar factory in Hardrock (I think it’s hard rock).

Not sure of what time of year you are going but I would double check that everything is open before going. This time of year can be hit or miss depending on weather.

Hi, I can address the queer issue but not the race one from personal experience. I'm gay and my partner is trans. I have been to San Diego, and feel more comfortable being queer in NJ. Parts of NJ are less ideal and more Trumpy, but most is not. I am seconding Somerville and New Brunswick as places that are diverse, particularly queer friendly, and have fun things to do for a person in their twenties. I now live in a more rural area nearby, and I love it, but that would not have been my preference in my early twenties.

So we went to AC this past summer. Walked the boardwalk with kids, both teens. They had some things to do, rides, candy shop, etc. would I leave my teens to roam the board walk while I went to a casino. Definitely not. Numerous drunk/ high individuals roaming the board walk. One or two where visibly agitated and punching walls. This was around 11-2 am so I only imagine the evening would be worse.

Somerville is one of the safest counties in the entire country. I'm sure there's racism here just like there is everywhere but the tri state (NJ, NYC, CT) has a pretty great culture of acceptance and the racists are few and far between

>What would a 1 bedroom apartment run me in a pretty decent area? I'm assuming it'd be much less than San Diego haha ($2.7-2.9k over here).

Oh honey. I mean sure, a little less, maybe 1,800 to 2,300 but it's still expensive here

>Also - I'm not the.. straightest person around. How bad is that taken within the state, and in Somerset County (?)/ surrounding cities?

We're an LGBT friendly state.

The fuck kind of reputation do we have that ppl don't know this? We were the first state to ban gay conversion therapy, and that was under our republican governor.

I don't consider myself anti-AC, but it's a poor, run-down, crime and drug-infested area.

The boardwalk reflects this.

I have only had a few Atlantic County cases, but I have a friend who does PI and criminal and has an office there. It's rife with criminals, on the street and even in the city government. The mayor got into a fist fight with someone at a casino recently.

Ocean City, either NJ or MD, is the place to go.

I had that same question about 1.5 years ago but here we are and it is the same. It probably won't get better in a few months. Took about 10 offers for one to finally stick for us last year after almost 2 years of looking

Apparently Showboat got rid of its casino and now has a brand new child-frjendly arcade and go kart track called Lucky Snake Arcade.

However I'd keep a very tight eye on your kids in any kind of Atlantic City arcade.

I did and it seems fine but the hostile reaction to the idea last time had me second guessing. Obviously firsthand experiences are best so I’m curious but it’s interesting to hear there’s a bias here
