The city goes to great lengths to make the boardwalk area safe. Sure you might see some homeless people or drunks, but that happens everywhere. Atlantic City would be fun for a field trip, there is plenty to do. You could even get the kids to clean the beach. I did a field trip with my high school students to Sandy Hook a few years back, we cleaned the beach and had a great time. The park rangers helped us with garbage bags etc and had a short program for the kids. Maybe Atlantic City has something like that too.

The Steel Pier rides open April 8. Many of the boardwalk shops are already open now, especially on the weekends. The Showboat is now an arcade.

Check out https://jcpromotions.info/calendar/ - they run TONS of Street Fairs and Flea Markets in NJ, and they’re constantly adding more. When I first started checking their website 5+ years ago, they had like 5-10 Fairs they produced. There are DOZENS now.. one almost every weekend during spring, summer and fall. If you tap on the event name/date, there’s a link to register your booth/table and/or contact info if you have questions.

That website is also a great resource for people who are just looking for something to do on a random Saturday or Sunday, too.

Good luck!

Not unattended, for sure! I’d bring at least 2 adults for a group of six. There are way too many predators and opportunities for trouble. We have several 14yo nieces who could pass for 20 in a heartbeat. If you plan on giving them any amount of free rein I’d consider somewhere less adult oriented.

I have a home in Brigantine - we have taken our 6year old to the boardwalk multiple times as a family. it is especially nice in the spring. Would I choose Steel Pier over Wildwood? No. Would I let my teen wander alone while I sat at a slot machine? Hell no. But there is still plenty to do. Showboat and Oceans are most kid-friendly areas. I would suggest going mid-morning and wouldn't let them venture off alone - AC still has sketchy people

How often was that pipeline required to be inspected? Were there standards that pipe was supposed to meet to safely avoid rupture, would it have been scheduled for replacement if EPA deregulation wouldn't have happened?

I don't know the answers, but to say a ruptured pipe could have "nothing to do with politics" is just wrong. It's very possible it could have been avoided with stronger regulations.

Incidents like this should also be used to inform future policy regarding inspection, structural, and safety requirements for both new and old pipelines, to strive to minimize more incidents like it in the future.

If I'm traveling with 2 very young children and want to stop somewhere for a couple of hours along the drive from northern NJ to Newport, where should I stop? One option is Mystic CT, assuming we can make it 2.5-3 hours. If we want to stop somewhere west of Mystic, where?

Yes - look up Lucky Snake Arcade. They have gokarts indoors and a full former casino-floor full arcade games & pinball machines. I think there is also a Sugar Factory at Ceasars. There is more than enough for them to for a few hours.
