How big of a house are you looking for?
Some towns for you to look into would be Bordentown, Cherry Hill, Burlington, Pennsauken (although not the part of Pennsauken on the Camden border)

Depending on how big of a house you need, your budget is a little bit on the low side, but not completely crazy (north and central jersey prices get much crazier).

Also, the Barrington/Bellmawr area is also nice, but there are a lot more conservatives there compared to most of the state, which is worth noting if that's important to you.

AVOID CAMDEN AT ALL COSTS. There may be some slightly nicer parts to *visit*, but none of it is nice to live in. Please don't get tempted by the really low house prices there, it's not worth it.

Vineland, Bridgeton, and Lindenwold aren't necessarily dangerous, but they are more low income towns.

I definitely recommend FB groups for activities you're interested in (my husband and I have made a couple friends through the kayaking and motorcycle groups we're in).

And, uh, if it's not overly dorky, I've legit made friends while traveling by playing Pokemon Go. It was a bit different before the pandemic, because everything social needed to happen relatively close to the gyms to battle and now Pokemon Go lets you do stuff from a distance. But if people are starting to congregate around the gyms again, it's a fun way to make a wide group of friends.

Petition doesn't have any real value so it doesn't matter anyway. You did hit the nail on the head though. The mom's story was awful, and as a parent I hate to hear it and think only of my own kids, but like you said it is only one side of the story, and a side with what may be considered a vested interest.

Someone comes to your work and says things you consider to be untrue publicly. What would you do?

If you’re looking for beautiful, remote landscape that’s the area. Zero nightlife, incredibly conservative area. The scenery doesn’t make up for it for me.
