Reply to TN teacher NJ apartment hunting by gmoor90
I advertise restrictive and strict policies when I'm renting out my properties. I'm not actually restrictive and strict. I just want to keep as many doors open so that I can refuse people that I don't like. Not discriminatory or anything like that. Sometimes I don't get a positive vibe from someone. So I'll point to one of my restrictive policies so I don't get sued.

Those are for families from out of town who are seeing all there is to see along the Rt 1&9 corridor - the wonderful shops, the attractions, the great restaurants and of course the nearby waterfront.

Lookim at crime stats then: https://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Newark-New-Jersey.html
Maybe not accurate but paint a picture. There are definitely good parts and bad parts of Newark so before you rent, at least go in person to get a feel. I used to work in Newark and would choose a closet in jersey city over an apartment in Newark.

I used to work as those providers, knocking doors but I'm sure the company I was its legit, good prices for customer y reward for me. Every year a had to sign them up again for new contract. Few years later prices goes up so no more subs. Still I can get the reward if I sign them up, but I dont do business like that, if I'm switching them is to save money, no spend more. It's hard to educate people & let them know how they can save few bucks on their bills. I saw others impersonate as pseg employers to get their bills acc easily but I dont do that, maybe thats why I failed doing that business.

Please please please don't ever call Newark a suburb of NY. Don't get me wrong, we love New York, but we're also proud of our own state and wouldn't want to think of one of our most major city as a suburb for another place.
With that being said, I'd recommend spending a few hours driving around and walking the downtown. If you feel comfortable and happy during that time, maybe you would want to move there. If you feel nervous, and/or uncomfortable, maybe it's not the right place for you.
P.S. Google street view is great, but IMO does a terrible job of getting a places vibes.

If you can live in the Midwest, or even just outside of Chicago, you might be happier. Since you’re so young, though, why not give yourself a year or two in a few places? Don’t worry about a permanent place yet. And maybe get that 4 yr degree finished while you do it. It’ll be better for you in the long run.
In 20 years, you’ll be making good money d your employer will want to replace you with someone cheaper. (Just facts.) without a degree, you’re more replaceable.

Reply to These NJ counties saw the largest population drop as residents migrate to other areas by madrid987
"The outmigration helped lead northern counties to the largest overall population losses in the state. Essex, Passaic and Bergen counties combined to lose nearly 11,000 residents, according to Bureau estimates. All three had population losses the prior year, according to estimates."
"Ocean County was one of only three counties to add more than 1,000 residents in 2012-22 (6,000), according to Bureau estimates. Gloucester and Burlington counties respectively grew by nearly 2,000 and 1,700 residents, according to estimates."
The numbers are so small it's insignificant, seems to me just normal movement of some people from northern counties to southern for retirement purposes, or to be closer to the shore, and some movement to counties that are more affordable/more space.
