Well if we're going down that road, almost all child kidnappings are done by the kids other parent and it's not to kill them.

So if we are looking to stop all child kidnappings that result in the child's murder, we would have an insanely high false positive result. You'd be jailing thousands of people, leaving their kids orphaned and vulnerable to violence. So yeah, don't use the shitty tools to cause more harm than good.

You mentioned the police and DA thinking it may have been valid at the time. I'm in a completely different sector but I sometimes have to evaluate equipment and software that is supposed to prevent medical errors. I can say that in my industry the amount of BS that is slung to potential buyers by sales representatives is rampant, and oftentimes the product is complete garbage. I can only imagine the people selling whatever it was back when this was considered to be a valid investigative tool probably had the same kind of BS sales tactics and tried to fool them into believing it just so they could make a profit.

Yet another drawback of unregulated capitalism in a sector where there needs to be a lot of scientific oversight and thorough validation due to the chances of inflicting such great harm on a human being whether that's some sort of life altering injury or taking away someone's life by putting them in jail.

And I'll just qualify that by saying this in no way excuses them, but it just kind of struck a chord based on the experiences I've had in a different sector.

These sentences are not inline with their crimes, they put this woman through some serious shit! And used his position as a deputy U.S. Marshal to facilitate their crimes.

Yeah it makes me pretty sad. I also worked at a liquor store and people blew money there too like no tomorrow. Like we had a dude who would hit whippits and had jaundice but felt the need to buy cheese serving boards (like the fake granite ones without actual cheese) and booze instead of food. He pulled out a wad of ones and had like 10 whippits fall out one time. Said it was his last few bucks so I refused to sell him anything and told him I would check him out if he got food.

Amazon's hiring algorithm once had to be turned off becsuse it became racist and sexist. It was automatically excluding non white and female sounding names.

Iirc, it was because the majority of applicants were white males. As a result, most of the hires were white males. The AI recognized this as meaning that white males were the ideal candidate and would hire them more, which caused a feedback loop.
